Does anyone know if the 3.4 crankshaft is counterbored for a clutch pilot bearing if it came from the factory with an automatic transmission? I have a chance to pick up a low mileage motor for cheap, but the truck is auto trans and mine is 5sp.

I'm not sure what you're asking here. There should be no difference in the crankshaft pilot bearing between manual and automatic. Otherwise, the manufacturer would have two different motors, and that wouldn't make sense.

Automatics don't require a pilot bearing, manuals do. He's wanting to install a engine from a automatic truck into his manual truck.

Yep understood. My point is that there should be no difference in the end of the crank regardless of tranny.

That's what I wanted to know. I have seen cranks from motors with automatic transmissions that weren't counterbored. Can't remember for sure what brand, but i think it was a Chrysler product.

    I found a 99 4runner with 97k that I can get the motor out of for $750.

Good question tho, I would want to know too if I was buying a replacement engine.I know from experience Chevy v8s in mid 50's & 60's were not bored for the pilot bushings if they came from the factory with the power glide transmission.
