I did a wiggle test with all the belts off and its solid. It's possible the disc is warped or the balancer outer ring is slowly starting to fail. I'm going to swap it out, the big question is...OEM or aftermarket? Looking at $300 OEM. It being a mechanical component is OEM really that much better in this scenario?

Okay! Sooo yep, confirmed. The Harmonic balancer is slowlyyyy failing at the the rubber bushing. At least a 1/16” off (I’m sure some of you would prefer I use metric system)

Did you buy OEM replacement or Aftermarket (if so what brand)?

It was aftermarket but it’s been long enough I don’t recall the brand for sure, but I’m thinking it was a dorman

i have a 98 tacoma and the large pulley (closest to the block) is completely loose. I can actually spin it and slide it back and forth (front to back). is this normal? Or is my pulley bad? My alternator drive belt was completely shredded. How is the pulley attached to the crankshaft or other two smaller pulleys?

Yeah that inner pulley- harmonic balancer - the inner rubber guts of it went out on mine....
In the end it wobbled so bad it cracked the inner oil pump section on the timing cover inner wall.

It all had to be replaced.......

Sometimes it even damages the crankshaft key slot so bad it destroys the crankshaft.....

So be ubber careful when you stab the new one.....its easy to damage that key......

ouch! thanks for the reply. i didn't realize that the crankshaft pulley was actually 3 different pulleys, correct? Also didn't realize that the harmonic balancer had a rubber "insert" that eventually wears away. I am now trying to figure out how to take the 3 pulleys apart.

take out the main bolt that holds the balancer on, then all three will come out as one. Then there should be 4 small bolts holding the outer 2 pulleys to the balancer.

Theres a number of vids out there.......even the 4 runners are the same...
Your gonna have to break that HB bolt loose.....in a place cant get an air impact in there...

I used the starter bump method......looked scary as hell......but I survived........

All the auto shops carry the doorman HB replacement.....usally takes a day from main warehouse.....

It would be a good time to replace the two idle pulleys on engine power front plain......alt pulley/ ac pulley.....

Same with the timing cover replacements.....they sell a bunch of them on line...

    wonder why.......

Theres three seals you have to get too......oil pump.....harmonic sleeve seal (inner timing cover) and front engine seal....

Oil pump gasket goes out every 80K or so from the heat.......so might as well do that while in there.....

REALLY appreciate all the help from everybody. will i need to remove the lower shroud and fan to give me enough room to take off the bolt and pulleys?

It’s tight, but they will come out with the fan and shroud in place.

    sorry for all the questions...
Any idea what the size of the heads are of the four small bolts?
What is torque for small bolts?
Should I apply a thin layer of oil on the crankshaft oil seal?
best way to lock crankshaft in order to torque the crankshaft/balancer bolt?
