I went wheeling yesterday, and one of the tube steps hit a rock

Well, they -all- hit things. They're practically designed to run ground clearance.

But one of 'em broke. Check out those awesome welds. They're like a virgin.. No penetration!

I'm going to see if the dealer will replace them.. Or just take them back. I never wanted em to begin with

So you hit a decorative item supported by parallel arms with a 4400 lb hammer and expected not to break it?

Yeah, that's the plan. I was going to try selling the tube steps to fund the sliders. So if I get a new set from Toyota under warranty, I'm going to see if they'll leave em in the box. Easy sell :)

I don't expect it to really perform. But i certainly didn't expect the weld to snap. I pulled the thing off with my hand. The other side was barely attached.

They'll warranty this the same way they would a quarter panel after you slide into a telephone pole. You had a collision. Decorative part against the ground. The weld was never intended to support the weight of the vehicle and it worked just fine until you broke it. Besides, that's aluminum, once stressed it's done. Magical thinking that it'll be covered under warranty somehow...

Those steps are not sliders. Not designed for impact OP. Upgrade to sliders.

If the step just fell off or broke when stepping into the vehicle, that would be a warranty issue. The fact it's been hit and pushed backwards will result in no warranty. My truck has the same steps and if I were to go wheeling, I'd pull them off. The design of them is to help short people to get into the truck and not to take a beating by bottoming out or hitting objects on the ground.

Look, your lucky it broke the weld, if not you could have just caused more damage to the cab. I say you got lucky throw it away and get some weld on sliders.

Not sure how you expect dealer to warranty them. It was clearly your fault. Yes they are weak but to get new ones is not going to happen

I wouldn't waste any time attempting to get your dealer to cover something that was clearly your fault. Just chalk it up as a loss and move on to some real sliders.

Amazing. You beat the shit out of your new truck and expect the dealer to fix it free. Can you please take a video of the conversation with the dealer, so I can see the looks on their faces before they laugh at you?

Fair enough, here I thought this looked like a crap weld with no penetration. Guess I was wrong

My point in posting this wasn't to bitch about the thing I did you my truck, but to warn people to check theirs out before relying on 'em to hold a persons weight.

And, no, I'm not going to bother getting the dealer to warranty it. After looking at it again I saw that I bent part of the bracket after I yanked the thing off the side. You can all relax and go back to pissing and moaning about the grill now :)
