Waking up early to spend your morning sitting in a waiting room is a convenience? Fuck me, I thought I knew what that word meant.

I've worked at three dealerships and you would not believe some of the things that were commonly sold to customers. I've seen people come in for a leaking thermostat gasket, and when they leave the have a bill for over four grand which they agreed to as they were upsold. The urge to take the easy way out is strong in people, and a lot see spending their paycheck as easier than knowing rudimentary vehicle common sense.

In my case it definitely fits the definition. Not saying it's convenient for you. Also helps I'm like 12 minutes from the dealer. I don't have a garage, or a flat surface to work on either.

Well, it works because some people take them up on the $55 air filter change since they keep doing it

I would find a different dealership, mine doesn't try to upsell anything. They only thing they will do is mention a service is coming up or due, like a cabin filter or air cleaner etc.

Half the time when they mention it I tell em, thanks for reminding me and I pick up those parts from the parts department while waiting for the oil change and switch em out in the parking lot after the oil change.

Now I'm not sticking up for dealers. I've had my share of stories however it's just the world we live in.

How about the local HVAC guy quoting 2x the furnace cost for at most 2 day install, usually a day and a half. I'd like to make ~$5K+ for a days work. Who hasn't heard the HVAC guy say you need a new furnace, A/C unit or water heater when they are working OK. Not picking on HVAC but just an example.

We always get the neighborhood sales pitches, your roof looks like..., your windows need replacement, gutters, extra blacktop, etc...

    So true...

My parents went for the extra blacktop thing when the company was in town doing a big job for the city itself. Blacktop was done well, huge improvement from the gravel my parents had before. They come back the day after doing it to tell my parents the city was going after them for the permit to do the work, and it was going to be like $300 (which was like half the price of the job). Apparently city only gave them permit to work on city property and every single private residence needed their own permit for them to do the work they already did. Mom said "nope". All in all, it worked out great for my family. Not so much for them :)

A software engineer might say the same about you when you buy apps for your devices. "Why didn't he just thrown down some code"? "It's so simple and rudimentary."

My Subaru dealer as well - they have changed the wiper blades at NO CHARGE on 2 occasions.

I somewhat concur with a previous post - where someone mentioned how in this world, lots of the population can't even check their oil level.
So it's good that the dealer looks for this stuff but to take advantage isn't right.

When you eat out the waiter/waitress is required to ask if you want dessert. No different with dealerships.

I'll make it even more simple... I've never bought an app and I have no idea why I would.

All dealerships are the same. Seems to me it's the culture. Go into any service department with your eyes closed, you won't know what make of dealership you're in. The HVAC business in residential is shady. I worked in HVAC for 30 years commercial/ industrial though. The resi guys are recommending replacements on equipment that's less than 10 years old!! But I guess you have to give them something....this equipment works as good or better than a Toyota from the 80's! I know my furnace hasn't been looked at for at least 5 years besides filter changes. It's better to have a bit of knowledge and see these scams. But they're not looking for the guys who know a bit, they are preying on those that don't!

reminds me of when the low hanging fruit at my subaru dealership caught a poor 20 something lady waiting for her car sitting next to me. Came up and gave her the entire sales job on the air filter black mold, dust mites, blah offer $110 to change it and save her life. Service advisor walks away and I pull up the 15 second YouTube video on how to change it and show her the video replacing the $20 filter. She couldn't get to that advisors Desk quick enough.

I hate stealershits with a passion. I know there are some good ones, but I’ve never found one yet.

I only go there for warranty work, even then sometimes it’s not worth it… Unfortunately.
