Haven't been on here in a while but I need some advice. I crash my 05 tacoma yesterday.

I just got the estimate and the total repair cost minus the deductible is $12k. I figure before it was crashed it was worth around $17k. So Im trying to get as close to that number as possible.

Any ideas of the viability and profits for each option would be greatly appreciated!

The options I have as I see it:

-Get is repaired and sell it. The question is how much would it be worth after.

-Take the money for the repairs and sell the truck as is. Any idea of how much I could sell it for?

-Take the money for the repairs and part it out. Any ideas of how much the big stuff is worth? Engine, transmission, (which I believe are undamaged) etc. After I get the big stuff out of the way I could make a thread and where everything would be for sale and after TW has picked what they want from it, take it to the scrap yard.

    Thanks!

I would not hesitate to part it out. The value will take a hit with a major damage incident on the Car Fax report. Frame damage is always a concern, etc. Good luck to you.

Screen shots of the estimate are in my photos if anyone is interested.

If the insurance company is going to total it, take the cash and offer to buy the truck back from them. The truck will be far greater in value than what they'll sell it to you for. It will have a salvage title so selling it as is could be a problem, but parting it out could result in a fairly good profit. I have a friend who just did this on a 2006 Chevy crew cab 4x4 dually duramax. They gave him 30k for the truck and sold it to him for 5k. He parted it out and made his 5k back quick. Just an idea.

Edit: They're going to repair it? Doesn't make sense with those numbers.

Thanks. I think your right that I will get the most parting it out. But if I could sell the whole truck for a few grand that would be worth it if it saved me the time and hassle of parting it out.

They haven't said for sure yet. But I was under the impression they would only total it if the cost of the repairs exceeds the original value before it was crashed.

    Too few to list.
I sure hope your friend made more than $5K parting it out.

OP, who's your insurance company? Usually the good companies would total it out if it's over 60% of the value.

This...100x this if you have the space.

My first car, a 1990 Honda Accord was totaled in an accident. Although I wasn't surcharged, I also didn't receive a payout from the other insurance company (I rear ended someone on the highway after they cut me off and locked up due to clueless driving in a construction zone).

I ended up parting the car and I made over KBB book value with it.

In my experience, trying to part out any vehicle is an experience in frustration and a waste of time. Unless you have easy enclosed storage and work space and have someone lined up to take major components and then scrap the rest (or, better, they buy it all and /they/ dispose of it), either sell the while thing to a salvage yard or let the insurance company take it if totaled.

Stock parts just aren't worth the time to sell, especially on a common older vehicle.
