It's the only collision I can't avoid. I've also read that it can cause the most damage to the frame. What things can I do to beef up the rear so a rear-end at parking lot speeds doesn't result in a total loss?

A decent steel plate or tube bumper will do well enough at parking lot speed (like 10 mph or less) to keep the sheet metal safe and likely your frame will survive it.

You can get frame reinforcement plates to weld onto the c channel portions of the rear and some guys box their rear frame but there is no collision proofing over I’d say like 25 mph.

I know of at least one guy rear ended in traffic with a plate bumper and a welded frame reinforcement and it actually injured him much worse than a stock vehicle because you take away the vehicle crumpling as intended.

I don’t know if many people are looking to collision proof their truck against other vehicles, more trail proofing them.

I think the way you drive is the biggest detriment.....

Seems most on the highway around me.....were taught to keep a safe half-car length between cars at like 75mph.........

    .....what could go wrong.......

I bike commute some days.....and the cars seem to have same theme....
get out of my way....your little #$*t.....get out of my way or I'll run your ass down.....

I'm two weeks out from my last wreck.......I got Rogue'd.....Nissan....

The best way is is to build a rear bumper and install collapsing brackets to absorb the shock.

I am sure with some searching you can find the equations to calculate the information you need .

This would serve the same purpose as the crush cans in the front of most vehicles.

You would still likely have a fight with person`s insurance who hit you . Then you might just say sorry you hit me and drive off .

It does not take much to total a 20 year old truck.

Crash-proofing the rear is to NOT drive it at all.

The only time I've heard of the person in the car in front being at fault is when the guy in front of my dad put it in reverse and floored it at a stop sign! It was a moot point anway, as the guy was so drunk, his insurance was void. You're going to have to really be creative to rear end somebody and have them at fault.

It's not as extreme as the ramp rack. I see a 2nd gen RC with a dropdown tailgate ramp that can carry two walk behind mowers in the bed.

    You missed my point!

If you turn the claim into the person behind you who hit you .

With an older vehicle it ends up to a fight to not have your vehicle totaled.

Then with today`s inflated prices lack of new parts plus paint matching and painting . The numbers add up fast

Insurance Companies are so very different then different states are as well.

I get what you're saying about how easy it is to write off a 20 year old truck, but you also stated that the driver who rear ended you "might just say sorry you hit me and drive off ."
I'm saying that this is highly unlikely to happen or be believed , especially if there are witnesses. Anytime there is damage to the rear of one car and the front of another where vehicles are traveling in the same direction, you'd be hard pressed to find the person rear ended to be at fault. In my jurisdiction, you are usually given first right to your written off vehicle anyway.

You guys realize the OP starts this thread, only to abandon them right?

Look at the many new, ridiculous threads started only to be left with others bickering.
