I tried to find IIHS and/or NCAP test results and it doesn't appear that they are published. Anyone have a guess on when these results will appear?

The Gen 2 Tacos had average ratings, at best, so I'm hoping Toyota addressed these concerns.

Drive a 2016 tacoma into a brick wall and that will tell us how good they are in a crash.

I'm more concerned with side and corner crash tests.

Shouldn't be much different than the 2nd gen.

This. Another reason to keep the same cab would have been crash testing. The longer snout of the 2016 should help the crash test rating too.

They addressed the problems of the 2nd gen Tacoma. That's why it has a longer snout and new brackets under the frame that tie to the transmission cross member and also has an extra plate welded onto the frame next to the front cab mount. Back in 2005 as I recall the Tacoma had 5 star crash ratings then it got a little tougher over the years and dropped to average in some testings but kept the 5 star in head on collisions.

Where do you see the 2nd gen scored just average? Every video that I have seen has been very good, side, frontal and frontal offset. Would like to know the source of this information your getting. Always curious about this kind of stuff.

Maybe Im wrong about average ratings I always saw 5 star back in 2005 but I assumed it dropped as crash test rating became more stiff.

Yea I actually just searched for the newer crash test ratings on the 2nd gen and didn't find any. Everything I saw was overall best safety pick in its class 5 stars and a overall "GOOD" rating. I'm guessing thats why they kept the same cab design with the 3rd gens.

"Outgoing 2015 versions of the Tacoma haven’t fared all that well in U.S. crash tests, with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) giving the Tacoma a ‘marginal’ rating in the roof strength test (important as pickups have a propensity to roll over) and the federal NCAP tests finding just three-star results for the 2015 Tacoma in frontal impact."

You can sell a automobile without crash test ratings?
I would think that would be like UL listings for building lights. Unless completely custom fixture.

The NHTSA results for 2015 are not stellar. I think a lot of the high-strength steel they keep talking about was for crashworthiness. Since manufacturers design vehicles for the tests in place at the time, it's normal for new models to do very well initially.

I think the higher hood line is for pedestrian safety and I suspect that is why they had to raise the beltline and bed rails. However, high beltlines are popular these days and I assume that is largely for side impact testing, not *just* to look cool.

I think there will be a significant difference in the small overlap test. The larger cab mounts and extra frame bracing seem tailor made for this test. And we know this type of bracing helps because Ford's little game proved it: http://blog.caranddriver.com/iihs-2...te-results-between-crew-cab-and-extended-cab/

Pretty sure I remember reading that the pillars were beefed up on the 3rd gen so that they could hold more weight in case of a rollover.

The new knee airbags should also help with front and offset ratings as well.

My wife rolled my 2005 access cab, and I can tell you the results were very scary. The roof was entirely crushed in, down to the head rests. If I was in the truck, I probably would have been killed. She's only 5'2", so she was fine. The vehicle was only going 25 mph when it happened. Toyota must have had a clue about this being an issue when they added the high strength steel to the cab.

After seeing this first hand, I can tell you that improved roll over crash results (and crash results in general) are a top priority of mine. All it takes is one bad accident, and everything changes...

I have seen alot of 2nd gen roll over stories with pictures on here the past couple years I've been a member. Majority of all have turned out pretty good for the occupants with the roofs holding up fairly well. There was even one of a 2nd gen access cab rolling down a mountain and the guy walked away and truck was still fully functional. I would not call them the best, but certainly not the worst.

Hopefully Toyota did reinforce the 3rd gen structural safety cage, you can never be too safe.
