It would be nice to have a more modern radio in the Tacoma that still appears period correct. I don't want full on screens or flashy multi-color attention getting single din decks looking like the early 2000s. But I do want bluetooth and channel buttons large enough to actually be used for channel surfing. The Tacoma also uses amber backlighting for instruments and OEM radio, meaning the replacement must as well. Found this one from Continental which seems to check all the boxes. Going from a double din to a single does allow a pocket below the deck, which is perfect for placing a phone into.

One of my trucks most used duties is bike hauler, and with summer coming that need is becoming rapidly more apparent. My Ride88 racks were amazing in the 2nd Gen and Gladiator.

Both the prior trucks used bed track based mounting systems. The 1st Gen doesn't have a track system and therefor my racks do not currently mount in the 1st Gen. It also doesn't have the holes found in the full size trucks for the cross bar. So I finally ordered the hanger cross bar to mount the racks in the 1st Gen. Not as elegant as the other trucks, but will get the job done.

Replaced the cup holder insert tabs today. As a regular coffee drinker, it is nice to set your coffee in the cup holder without it tipping over (which has happened with the cup holders in their present condition).

    New OEM cup holder tabs.

These are made of an updated more durable material vs the original OEM ones.

6 bolts/screws to remove the console, and 1 screw to secure each tab. I hadn’t noticed till now, the cup holders are not the same size, nor are the tab lengths. The forward cup holder is smaller.

    Coffee is held securely now.

This is a simple one beer project. A good write up is here, so I won’t reinvent it:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/02-to-04-cup-holder-tab-replacement.159279/

I did notice that while pulling the center console, the rear inner seat bolts were extremely lose on the seats. Fixed that and checked all others which seemed fine. I’m betting the seats were pulled for detailing for sale and not properly reinstalled.

The was one of the first things I fixed on my 1st gen as well. Best twenty something dollars spent and not wasting my time hand cutting rubber to make my own.

Got the Ride88 hanger crossbar installed today to finally mount the bike racks. The tension system is a bit of a PITA to dial in compared to using the bed rails on the 2nd/3rd Gen. But once installed works great.

Put it to use immediately after install.

I'm so psyched to read through this build.

The knowledge drop and meticulous P/Ns, etc... the headlight upgrade thread is one of my favorite on all of TW.

Plus I have a '04 DC that I want to just mildly build as if it could have rolled off the line....

I wish I just bought your 1st gen. But you didn't put it up for sale until a few months after I bought mine. It's also awesome that you bought his 2nd gen.

My blower motor sounded like a rodent orgy. I ended up cleaning TF out of all the fins, etc. Hit up the bushings with some silicone lube and it hasn't made a single noise since (roughly 12 years).

I think mine was so gunked up it was off balance and making the shaft/bearing squeal.

That's so dope. I hate the double DIN touch screen the previous Broheim owner installed in my 04 DC.

I love the simplicity of the single DIN bluetooth media player I have in my 98. But this era correct model looks great.

I see you have to buy a wiring harness but that's no big deal. But does this head unit work with the 01-04 Tacoma stereo brackets?

I did the high density neoprene upgrade in my '98 (installed an 01-04 console in it). My 04 still has the OEM tabs. I prefer the stiffness and sturdiness of the HD neoprene. Holds mugs et al better in place. Nice for offroading.

    Looks great OP!

Can you tell me where you got these parts from? I’m having a hard time finding these OEM headlights and ends.
    Thank you in advance
