Update: I sold my truck. Toyota did a review and sent me an official letter saying the truck was operating normally. What is funny is that the tech that came over didn't realize I had a dashcam with audio. I caught some interesting conversations, and one was that he didn't even research crawl control and really didn't know how it was supposed to work. Oh well, I decided to go away from Toyota as I have been less than impressed with the response and lack of resolution for a $48K truck. I am sure I will be back one day.

Take care guys and good luck!

Took my 2020 3/20 Texas built OR out wheeling last weekend and purposely used CC on 4 different challenging climbs and descends, it did not exhibit the problems you and others describe, the inconsistency between trucks of the same model type and build dates is weird.

Best of luck with whatever you go with, just saw a photo of the new Frontier, maybe an option if you can wait that long.

Just wanted add to this thread. I’ve been looking at buying a new 2020. I just test drove a 7/20 build date, pulled up to the curb turned on crawl control and nothing it just sat there. I tried all 5 settings and nothing worked. I went back in and told them about the crawl control issue and it not working on that one. Another salesman said what are you talking about it works, I said let’s go try it. And of course again it didn’t work, he apologized and said this is the first he’s heard of it. He calls a tech and they left together and came back 10 minutes later and said it works perfectly fine and nothings wrong and refused to acknowledge the issue again. I’ve lost a lot of respect for Toyota here on this issue and definitely won’t be buying a 2020.

It feels to me like this will be one of those things they refuse to acknowledge until there is a critical mass of complaints, then all of a sudden there will quietly be a TSB to update the software or re-calibrate or whatever.

For 2020+ folks, I hope you are right.

I have a bad feeling that this is a result of some lawsuit that Toyota settled, and they have purposely neutered it. It wont surprise me if we find new ECU versions (for 2016-2020) neuter it also, but hopefully not.

I mean, we have a system that will attempt to propel the truck up a 30+ deg slope, driving all 4 wheels, hell bent on pulverizing a bus full of orphans or something. Just picture how a TV news crew would describe this system after somebody used it to drive into a mall or something, even if you can outrun it at a slow walk.

I too lost respect for Toyota. I actually have the audio and video from my dash cam where the corporate tech said he knew nothing about crawl control and they took my truck in the shop and adjusted the parking brake because he implied I would say they did nothing if they didn’t take it in the shop.

Finally got a chance to test CC in my 2020 OR. I forgot to check the exact angle, but it was a fairly steep ATV trail probably starting at 20 degrees and ramping up to 30-35 degrees. CC in low thru medium seemed to have no issue crawling until it got to the steepest part near the top of the hill. At that point the entire truck had been pulling up the hill fine. Where it stopped seemed fairly reasonable, but I'm honestly not sure if it should have stopped or continued to go by design. I know I've seen videos of 2020s not being able to crawl up even half that angle at all though so I *think* mine is working.

The one I test drove wouldn’t even go over a curb.

I should try a curb. I'm not exactly sure how going up a steep hill compares to pushing up a 90 degree curb.

I guess I’m one of the lucky ones. My new 2020 DCSB, the CC works just fine. I’ve tested it on curbs, ruts, and hills. So far so good.

2020 bought back in December... Mine comes to a stop on steep hills + obstacle or occasionally just steep hill no obstacle but it does seem like you can then apply a bit of gas manually to overcome that. That said I realize that defeats the purpose of a crawl control that shouldn't require any operator gas or braking.

Is this only happening in 2020 models? I have a 2017, but have yet to test crawl control.

Interesting. Do other years' CC never stop regardless of how steep the hills are?

That is my experience (2017), but the truck is more capable than my fear level so I cant say I have pushed it hard enough to really say

To date the issue, or change as it may be, has not been acknowledged by Toyota. Among the theories is CC was too aggressive and could get people in real trouble, or otherwise cause injury and vehicle damage.
