Man, sucks for you guys. Its really terrible. But I'm glad I got a manual. Low range 1st gear is my crawl control.

Does cc only work in 4wd low?

Yes. 4LO, supposed to work in either forward or reverse. Would be interesting to test backwards and see if it makes any difference with the current issues.

After reading through all of this, I am going to try mine out this weekend. I just got a 2020 TRD OR so I am interested to see if mine works. I will post results after testing mine. If it is not working, I will be taking it in.

Went and tested mine tonight and it seems fine to me. Not sure it’s really needed for the most part. And that sound of ABS and whatever else it’s doing is hideous. Won’t use it often for sure.

No offense but I glad I don't have cc. Even if I would never use it, I would still want it to work.

Just tried the same test @BandonBeachBumb did. Wood blocks, 4x4's on both front, 2x4's on both rear. While in 4L, neutral, flat surface, chocked all 4 tires. Into drive, release brake and engine idle brings it solid up against the blocks. Turn on crawl control, low setting; CC gives it throttle and the truck just sits there against the blocks, no climbing. I watch for 5 seconds, adjust CC to the high setting - no change; CC was just holding it there at a steady throttle. Sit and watch, after 15 seconds the screen has a "crawl control deactivated" warning. Another 5 seconds and CC releases the throttle and the engine returns to idle. Repeated this several times with the same results. I tried just 4x4 blocks in the rear, same process, it climbed over just fine.

It appears there is a maximum throttle limit CC is allowed to apply. After that, if there is no movement it gives up and turns off. I somewhat expect a give up and turn off feature for safety reasons. From what I am seeing on mine, and BandonBeachBumb's tests, it appears either 2016-2019 had no CC throttle limit, or at least it was much higher than the 2020 CC throttle limit.

When I get some time this weekend I will retry this test with an OBD reader watching the throttle position.

Same experience, and I believe the same about the throttle threshold.

When I said my Off-Road 4Runner really hit it, it was very aggressive.
The throttle was enough that most tires left skid marks after coming off the blocks. But it did, within a split second, slow itself down.

The whole thing was kind of jarring. So I can understand them turning it down a bit, if previous Tacoma’s were like that. But not completely neuter it.

I wonder if the 2020 4Runners are doing the same.

yep, you are on it. 2019 truck applied throttle when it gets into a stuck situation and 2020 does not.

I don’t know about you guys but that makes craw control pretty much a useless feature and it doesn’t work as advertised.

Awesome, looking forward to hearing what the issue is. Hopefully this will result in a fix for the rest of us.

Mine seems to be working. Found about a 25- to 30-degree hill in the back yard and approached it sitting at about 10- to 15-degrees before engaging CC. Carried me right up. Build date is 01/20 if that helps.
I do have about 1100 miles on it as well.

Did it apply enough throttle or just stay at idle?

That’s a good climb, but would be curious what would happen if there was an obstacle.

Encouraging if yours does work though.

@JPA2002 it applied throttle pretty good. I did a few passes with varying speeds on CC. Infact, the first pass was rather quick as I may have had it to high for what I was testing. The second pass involved the brakes groaning. My guess is that is how it is controlling the speed for each wheel and preventing roll back.

@BandonBeachBumb does climbing over a destroyed pompas grass bush count? Haha it was the steepest part in the yard.

I can get a picture of said "hill" if y'all would like it.

Edit: I think I have some 4x4 posts that I could throw down at the wheels and try it again and see. I did not air down for any of this. Not sure if that has anything to do with it as well.
