I'm now having CC envy. :)

I learned that lesson the hard way one morning while hunting.......stepped over some deadfall timber....onto false ground and into a 3' deep hole. Broke one of the metatarsal bones in my right foot.

Long way from my truck....way over an hour drive home to the house. Wearing damn rubber style boots without laces to adjust.

By the time I made my way to the truck that beast was so swollen I had to cut the boot off. The hour drive home and to the doctor was not much fun, but better than the trek outa those woods.

Gotta be tough if yer gonna be a dummy like me, lol.

Dude, a little preparation could have prevented all this.

Plan for the worse, hope for the best

Glad you made it out ok buddy. Scary shit!
Usually incidents like that are half way done happening before your brain recognizes they even started. Makes for the best lessons though lol

I had a similar experience using crawl to descend some steep ice/snow covered hills up port alberni area last year. Made a hell of a racket with the ABS going off but works like a hot damn.

So what's the difference between crawl control or having the truck in 1st/4-Lo?

I agree totally, but the only thing that might have helped me be more prepared was tire chains, and a satellite phone. I’ve done endless hours of snow driving in the back country. I spent many years of my life as a service tech, forced to travel to remote wilderness sites in all weather and all seasons, so it isn’t my first rodeo on snowy mountain logging roads. I had never encountered the type of situation and unexpected loss of traction that I came across yesterday, which might explain my arrogance or over-confidence going it alone. I am also experienced enough to know just how bad the road was the rest of the way down. If I was forced to ride the brakes, or even apply the brakes, in the steep pitches, I would have been over the edge. As said, it was a lesson learned, even for an old guy like me. I’m not joking when I state that the crawl feature absolutely saved my ass.

I don't have ABS or A-TRAC. Just a manual with limited slip.

Does Atrac work on decents? I thought that was just traction control?

Crawl Control controls the rotation of each wheel independently to a set speed selected by the driver. It’s like having the gas and brakes on at the same time. The ABS is constantly being fired at the same time the throttle is being controlled by the computer. Sounds like your truck is falling apart, but it isn’t.

The best way to describe what is happing to each wheel is they are being “indexed”. Unlike traction control, which simply stops wheel spin, using the brakes when it is detected, Crawl Control constantly rides the brakes, and manipulates the throttle so each wheel notches forward at a prescribed speed.

If you hung the truck in the air, the wheels would keep turning at the exact same rate.

I agree with this 100%. If I had chains, there would be no story to tell. Without chains (my mistake) I was glad to have the technology.

ATRAC slips on all 4 but doesn't control the truck going down hill without throttle input. The 4runner has Downhill Assist Control which is different from ATRAC.
