Was out goofing around with my brother in the rain today. First time off road with the new rig and I wanted to test it out on slick muddy terrain. I made a few quasi-narly 30+ degree hill climbs today and it seemed to me that good ol' fashioned 4-Lo was working a lot better than crawl control.

This first video I tried climbing in crawl control level 2. I got about three quarters up and started to dig in.

Here is the same hill (rain miraculously stopped) in regular ol' 4-lo, no crawl control:

I feel like both have their time and place depending on the situation. I'm not surprised CC sucks on a muddy hill.
"It's just too wet and loose" my inner child laughed

Interesting. I don't have my truck yet so excuse the silly question: Does it default to Multi-Terrain Select in 4-Lo if you are not using CRAWL control? Either way, it seems to me that I would probably use MTS in 4-Lo and almost never use CCL except maybe to descend steep hills. I guess I'll have to play with it when I get it.

As for these videos, it seems like you were able to carry more momentum because you weren't being speed limited by CC and you took a different line.

Edit: Thanks for posting. I'd like to see more real-world tests like this.

Manual says you should have been level 4 to 5.

Makes sense since you would have more momentum to carry you through rougher sections.

You can overheat ATRAC? Wow, what a joke. Might as well just get a SR5 and get ARB air lockers, front and rear and be done with this mediocre Crawl Control/ATRAC/ELOCKER.

Awwww Maaannn! I don't want to work for my information! I want it spoon fed by the internet hive-mind! [Speaking of internet, since I don't have the skill to add inflection to my text, I want to confirm that was a joke.]

    Thanks.

You're right, So far the only value I've realized with CC is making steep descents. It's like "Descending for Dummies", makes it a real no brainer.

Even on level 5 the truck is moving pretty slow, I definitely agree with:

This rig is my first 4X4. This was actually the first mud run I've attempted. When I had my 06 SR5 Prerunner I only would opt for dry hard packed dirt, the SoCal desert terrain of choice. I can honestly say having two extra drive wheels in the front ROCKS!!!

You also started your 4LO climb in the grass.

and don't ever record with the vertical camera again. you'll be sent to prison for that if anyone ever catches you

I'm not doubting that these tools (CC,ATRAC,eLocker) are great for the average consumer. It's just a much surefire way to go with air lockers as the can-do-all 4x4 system while being reliable. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

the average user doesn't know when to use the front locker. It's easy to destroy the front end with all that weight over the front wheels when locked

I hate that too, especially as I am often on my PC as viewed from my TV. Funny thing is: I have a friend who specifically does vertical because "no one wants to turn their phone" to view it on FB or whatever. Actually, he is not my friend; but, I need a belay sometimes.
