I'm thinking about getting a Tacoma, and there's one piece of information I can't seem to find. Does the crawl control work with the manual transmission, or does one have to buy an automatic?

Thanks. So now I have to decide which feature I care more about :) All of my vehicles are automatic at the moment, and I really miss driving a stick.

Do you lose any other off-roading features by going manual?

you lose crawl control and multi terrain select, which i believe is replaced by ATRAC

also as a side note, you lose push button start

You gain actually being able to drive the truck, and not be driven by it.

I had the tough decision too, coming from a Subaru WRX. I settled for automatic because I don't feel I would get the same grin on my face driving a manual truck. Plus I wanted the nifty features. and I deal with southern CA traffic everyday (enough said)

One more thing that's worth mentioning is that long bed is out of the question if you want a manual... which is nuts, but I can probably live with a short bed.

I was trying to build one on toyota.com, and I got errors with the colors. If I want the Premium & Tech & Tow packages, it looks like I'm limited to silver, red, or blue exterior color. Is this possible? Or is it just a website bug? Why wouldn't Toyota paint it any color you pick?

EDIT: So it does let you pick the black exterior color when I switch to the automatic tranny.

So in summary, if you want a manual 4x4:

    - No long bed
    - No MTS
    - No crawl control
    - No push button start
    - No BLACK or MAGNETIC GRAY METALLIC exterior with Premium, Tech, & Tow package

The build site limits you to what's available currently on lots or allocation based on zip code. It won't let you build every combination in all colors even though they all are possible.

Thanks forty2... sounds like I need to go to the dealer and see what I can build with the help of a sales guy.

Be forewarned, Toyota doesn't do custom builds, but dealers can request specific trucks in allocation and they may or may not get requested trucks (special snowflakes, like DCLB OR P/T w/ JBL, might take multiple requests before one gets assigned). Some dealers may resist putting in an allocation request and try to push you towards what's on the lot, but if you have the time waiting works.

Thanks, that's helpful. I definitely have time, and I'd much rather wait than end up with the wrong vehicle.

This is correct. I ordered a special snowflake. Took 2 months for Toyota to accept, and another 3 weeks to be built

Go manual if you can. Most people say it is an overall better driving experience.

You get crawl control with the manual; it's your left foot.
