I tried out crawl mode yesterday for the first time and every mode except the rock setting (farthest right on the dial) sounded like absolute shit. All kinds of grinding and very jumpy when it would throttle/accelerate. Is this normal or is something wrong?

That’s how Toyota designed it. The first time I used it I thought the same thing.

    Just turn up the radio.

From what I understand... the process is basically grabbing and releasing the brakes while it's applying power. It does this independently at all wheels, and randomly as it searches for traction for each wheel.

Don't mind the noise. It works really well the times I've used it hunting. I don't think it's something that someone gets and plans on using it all the time. I very rarely use 4lo. Can't use it in 4hi, most of the time 4hi is all you need. So I wouldn't worry about it.

Hahahaha, yes, it sounds like your truck is literally going to grind itself to death. It’s normal, no problem.

It is much quieter if you are using it in a situation it is required. When unloaded it surges and sputters. When you are ascending or descending something steep it is very smooth, but you still get the ticking noise from the brake modulation, it’s just not as jarring and as overall noisy.

I’ve come to love the system for what it does, the odd time I’ve actually needed it.

True I more than likely will very rarely if ever actually need it. Just making sure I didn't buy a truck with major issues because that's definitely what it sounded like. Thanks a lot Toyota.

I was impressed how it worked going down a snow covered hill.

I found its not that noisy if you have it in the fastest setting

They should have called it “extreme mode” and had a key lock to engage it. Really, on most stuff it is total overkill. The system comes into its own way past most average off-roaders comfort zone.

The whole “get yerself unstuck” isn’t what the system is most useful for, and in my personal experience it does not get you unstuck at all. Stuck is still stuck.

What CC is, in my opinion, is a very powerful hill ascent and descent system, and for that use it really shines. I feel it is a safety system in this situations.

I don't have crawl control but from what I understand with it, the "grinding" is the ABS controlling the braking very rapidly.

Yeah I'm glad my salesman gave me a quick demo of it in action. I would've thought I'd broken it without his demo.

BINGO. And it also works in reverse!

Thats where I found it to be vital, even though I went years without ever having CC I now feel like I need it for this very reason, backing down a steep incline that you didn't make it all the way up.

Especially in steep sand or shale rock where your rear end can quickly kick out on you, CC keeps you straight and even reacts to the shale slipping under you, really impressive system in those situations.

Only time I tried it it was noisy. I think it was nosier at slower settings, but maybe that was my imagination.

So far 4-lo, airing down and a locker have worked for everything.

Another case of " I didn't try it before I bought it". It just blows my mind.
