I have a spanky new 2023 taco crew / long bed sport trd.

    Have run unit in 2H, 4H, & 4L.
Is 4L what is known as the crawl mode ?

Crawl control is an off road/multi terrain select mode that uses the ABS system. You have to be in 4L to use it. However, crawl control is only available in TRD Off Road and TRD Pro. If you look up at the control console on the ceiling, you'll either see a knob or a spot to put sunglasses. No knob, no crawl control.

If you have a sport, you do not have Crawl Control.

Must have read about it in the Owners Manual. I bought an off rd for all the goodies without paying for a pro. I'll never use the crawl control and probably never even go off road just like 90% of my fellow tacoma buyers..........

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
Not even close. Old north american 4x4s that had granny gears are levels lower than a stock tacoma in 1st 4-lo.

My 2016 TRD, Off Road. I am off road weekly, and use 4-lo 1st gear most trips. Down steep inclines, I am using my brakes constantly. Not good.

My old 86 F150 4x4 (4spd manual, 300 straight 6) I seldom used 4-lo 1st gear as it was so low, I had to use the gas pedal to get it to move down the same inclines. Even with a clutch, it would never stall uphill or downhill no matter how steep or slow you went. That was real crawl control and so simply implemented.

I use crawl control in my Taco when needed, but the design and functionality is a pain in the ass.

Love my Taco, but the stock gearing leaves a lot to be desired for real off roading.
