Howdy, new to the forum which is AWESOME. I am trying to buy a Taco from a local dealer here in NE Florida (Beaver), and they are trying to kill me on silly fees. Not only do they want a $1000 doc fee, they also want another $899 Southern Toyota Distributor Plus fee. By the time you add up their BS fees, tax, tag, title etc, a 28.5K invoice Taco is $34.3K out the door (thats +21%! !!!)

They are trying to convince me that every dealer in the SE pays that Distributor fee on top of the destination charge that is already baked into the invoice. Strangely, this dealer also does not even come up on the true car quotes as an option. I have searched for this fee and not found much.

I figured a 28.5K topline price even with a $1000 doc feee, $1800 in taxes, and $400 for tag or so should be out the door in the 31.5-32K range.

Any advise or comments are appreciated.

Walk away. Find a different dealer.

Can't say about your truck price. The tag-along fees are out of line.

Just tell them your desired "out the door" price, and if they don't agree then and there, just walk away. You might get a call back later. Happened to me, but this was AZ not FL.

Don’t just walk away, Laugh at them and say “good luck with that” as you walk away. Always good to give feedback.
Get quotes on what you want from several dealers.

Have you called a couple other dealers and asked about those fees?

Be very careful (as you are) buying in the SE or Gulf States regions.

It's often worth traveling outside those to get what you want.

How bad do you want the truck? If you don't buy it, somebody else will.

I agree the fees are BS but thats what the dealer can get away with when the trucks are so popular

When i bought mine in late 2015 there were only four 2nd gens left on the lot. Two of them were DCLB, one in black. Hate to say it but there was no way i was walking out of there without a truck. I didn't want a 3rd gen, i had to make my move.

Sure i didnt get "a good deal" on a brand new Tacoma.. but as time goes on and this truck continues to be super reliable, i care less and less about the price i paid 5 yrs ago

    Good luck

Many great clips on negotiating with dealers.

My dealer had a $499 "Conveyance Fee". Failed to note (as required by state law) that it is negotiable. Initially refused to budge on it. I walked away from the sales manager to cool off. Finally got them to at least split it and lowered the price by $250.
