Years ago I thought a diesel was the way to go. After my oldest son owning three now (2 Fords and a Dodge), no way would I want one. There is way too much maintenance required with the newer diesels.

I'll stick to gas, thank you anyway!

Diesel sucks. The bro cred lingers, but it’s mostly over for diesel in passenger cars and mini-trucks like the Tacoma. Toyota is smart to be concentrating on emerging technologies, not diesel.

Give it 5 years and I’m pretty sure diesel will be gone from full size pickups as well.

Lol probably because they aren't buying them. They're "liberating" them.
Would you buy a full electric off road Tacoma?

Yes, once it is a realized technology. I’ve worked on electrical generation for most of my career and am aware 95% of reliability issues, when you generate electricity with an internal combustion engine (diesel Genset), are associated with the engine itself, and only about 5% with the alternator or other electrical components.

The electric Tacoma will have more torque, more control, a better center of gravity, and be far more reliable and capable. It’ll get there, but it’s not there yet. Things are moving leaps and bounds right now in the industry, so I see it coming as a certainty.

People want Hilux for the novelty factor because you can get them in the US. Go to Europe where the hilux is common and they want a Tacoma. As someone said, fuck small displacement diesels, they are a pain in the ass. Now large displacement is a different story, there are some (but getting less) benefits of large displacement diesel over gas. Go drive the diesel Colorado, or a diesel hilux, they are both dogs.

Putting a Diesel engine in a Tacoma won’t increase towing, the engine is not the limiting factor, brakes and chassis are.

If you aren't a tool and die maker, you could hit up a reloading manufacturer for custom 14.5x114mm reloading dies. Good luck finding brass and primers. Bullets could be cast, swaged/jacketed or lathe turned.

I'd much rather an electric Tacoma than a diesel one.

Ive driven a Hilux many times, I’ll say I don’t notice a real difference between them and the Tacoma, but that’s just me. I’d prefer the ever so slightly longer wheelbase

I can’t agree with that, there’s just something about a diesel... just not a 4 cylinder

I would do this in a hot minute if my motor blew, I don't care what anyone else thinks. Drove a hi-lux around NZ a few years ago and I loved every second of it, My gasser feels like a pig in comparison.

    http://www.trucktrend.com/how-to/towing/1502-sae-j2807-tow-tests-the-standard/

Actually engine power and transmission cooling are typically the limiting factors for SAE J2807 tow ratings. The braking tests are only 20-0 mph. Most trucks pass that easily.

The Tacoma towing package adds an oil cooler and a transmission cooler to increase tow rating from 3500 to 6500 lb, but doesn't upgrade the axle, chassis, or brakes.

The Colorado 2.8L diesel has a higher tow rating than the 3.6L gas version, again with no upgrades to the axle, chassis, or brakes.
