It all depends on how it's been taken care of. I'll be jealous if you buy it! I picked up a 95' with 170k on it..

Think a lot of people are misinterpreting OP's concerns. He's questioning whether or not it's worth it to buy an older truck with low miles with the mentality that the low miles will give it a long life regardless of the actual age of the truck.

From my experience the "objective" quality of a truck is completely subjective. If you like the truck you're going to do everything you need to to keep it running. That said, objectively the most significant age related failure of first gen Tacomas is the frame rust debacle. Become educated on that subject and you'll be in the clear. Any other age related issues are going to be consistent accross all ages and models of Tacomas and they're going to lie on a continuous spectrum. There's not a breaking point or anything where quality drops off so just spend what you can afford to spend and that's the quality of truck you'll be getting.

Huh, I bought my 2004 with 81,xxx miles three years ago, just hitting 90,xxx miles now and just did my 90k mile service last week with the only problem being that the parking brake is seized and my rear bumper is rusting a bit. Other than that, no issues and drives as it should. Just do a good check over and use your judgement on the condition of the truck and I wouldn't worry bout the miles too much IMO unless it has some crazy numbers like 5,000 miles or 380,000 miles.

What everyone else said. You can't go wrong with a 1st gen. And that's great mileage to buy one with.

I bought a 99 with 91k last summer and put a small lift and 33x12.50 tires a few months later.
I have put 25k hard miles on it and it does me pretty good.

Anything that I have replaced (ujoints ball joints and tierods) have been due to my right foot and plenty of mud.
As long as you keep it up to date on maintenece it should be a good truck
