They are supposed to spray paraffin wax on the inside if the frame. This is just a guess but, I think the exhaust/cat gets the frame hot, causing the wax to melt in that area. All of the frame pictures I've seen look like they are rusting from the inside out. I found the second hole pictured just using my finger to push on it. The coating was still intact. But who knows, the people that treated my frame didn't even coat the it where the lift pads were. I would try the ballpeen hammer... lightly. If you find something stop and take it in. I would take it in regardless. In reality you should be able to beat on that area without so much as a dent. Just my opinion though.

I thought the rust streaks running down, was something dripping down from my engine. I applied Fluid Film over the rust streaks this spring, when I noticed it outside the CRC coating. Two weeks ago I resprayed the frame and noticed the same rust streaks, which had me worried, so now I'm double worried seeing yours.

Did you have the CRC coating applied on your frame, where the rust streak runs down in the first photo?

Sorry to ask you so many questions.

Did you make that hole where the rust streaks are running down or did the dealership, when they did the inspection in the first photo?

    Thanks,
    Mark

Yes, I had mine coated two years ago at 52k. It is my understanding that water and shush gets thrown in from the front tires through the holes on the outboard side. Then it sits in there and rots. The frame is boxed pretty much from the cross member to the front of the truck. The rust streaks are from the airflow through the frame pushing rusty water out while driving.

No worries. They found the hole in the first photo. I found the second one poking around.

After I had the CRC coating applied, I bought 10 plugs that all the later 2nd generation (2011-2015) come from the factory with under the front wheel wells and closes up a lot of those places salt/brine slush enter. When I did the Fluid Film spray, I used 32" extension wands that went deep into the front box section, but don't know if too much corrion has happened already.

I wish I would of done that. I just wish you could buy a product. Take care of it the way the manufacturer tells you to and it would last a good long while. By that I mean longer then brake pads or two sets of tires.

The only thing about checking the rust streak spot, is that it's very close to the catalytic converter and don't think I could get something as big as a hammer in there, but maybe there is another approach, seeing how the dealership was able to breach the frame wall.

Maybe I'm wasting my time with Fluid Film and should just let it rust normally, because just my luck I will keep it from getting a hole, using FF just passed the 12 year mark, then be stuck with a truck that won't pass inspection.

Yeah, the way you stated it puts it into perspective, you have a 9 year old Toyota truck and is basically undrivable, with Toyota that has a reputation of quality, reliability and longevity.

It makes me happy people like you are going to be getting new frames, with Toyota doing the right thing and that they extended the inspections too.

Anybody heard or read anything about the class action? There haven't been any updates on the website. I figured something would've been reported after the hear on April 27th
