I was notified about the warranty enhancement but never heard anything about spraying. From what I've read most dealerships didn't clean the frame properly and made the problem worse by trapping in the corrosion. I had it inspected when I got the notice and they said it was fine.

When I was on the east coast, I would hose down the frame weekly during winter. I coated with fluid film and also used motor oil. Yeah the used motor oil isn't great for the environment, but I am not talking about drenching the frame in it but applying it with a rag. Now i have a nice layer of oil and road grime the keeps the frame rust free.

Good luck on the frame. If you get a new one, be sure to coat it.

There's not enough left of my frame to coat. It would be impossible to clean it good enough to coat without trapping the problem in. I'm not going to let Toyota put me until my warranty expires so they can tell me to go shit in my hat. NOT HAPPENING!!

Does anyone think they should have to do weekly maintenance on the frame of their truck? That's not a truck I want to own.

Yeah your current frame looks to far gone to even bother with. If you get a new one, coat it in fluid film once a year and be sure to hose it down after driving on salted roads.

Good luck you need to find a new dealership! Not sure if you did not have frame coated that could be a big strike against you. And yes it’s way past getting that done now.

You should take better care of your shit.
There are few different solutions that keep metal frames from rusting away. Better luck next time and welcome to TW.

not weekly. But if you live up north in salt belt country you do need to do at least an annual treatment of the frame(any vehicle) or it is gonna rot away eventually. Also doing nothing ever and thinking it’s gonna last forever is not very smart either.

    OP,

I am really sorry this is happening to you. I am not offering any snarky comments. It is a real bummer and I completely understand why you would be so upset about it. I also give you a lot of leeway to vent -- if I were you I would do the same thing! Let it fly!

Seems to me you have three options at this point:

    1) You have to get a list of Toyota dealers far and wide. Visit them and plead your case. You need to find a dealer who really wants to do the frame swap. Many do and many don't. My 2005 had a frame recall and the dealer I got it from told me they loved to do them because it was hugely profitable. But they also told me you have to have those skills and a lot of dealers don't. Don't give up and keep asking -- you only need one dealer who will do it !

    2) If that doesn't work, you need to see if you can find a good frame restorer in your area. I can't tell from the pictures how bad it is. And, I am no expert. But you may want to start taking it to some frame places that may be able to remediate the frame. I am sure there are a lot of good folks on Ohio who do this kind of work. Here is an example of a company in NY that does this kind of work. It might be a good idea to find something similar:

    http://rustoration.com

Frame restorers might be able to help.

    3) If all else fails, and you exhaust pounding the table, perhaps there is a good shop that will do the frame swap for you. Not ideal. Not cheap. I get it. 100%. But depending on what you owe it might be worth looking into. Could be looking at $10K. Terrible, I know. but might be an option to consider.

Good luck and I hope it works out for you. Please post an update in how it gets resolved. I only wish you the best.

Frame was coated originally, for what it was worth. Have a new friend who is an expert body man and undercoats with a variety of products including bees wax. He will be the first person I see with my new frame. Don't see how Toyota can hold that against me when I got the corrosion notification had their dealership inspect it they said it was fine. I've lived at the same address for 15 years and I got all their other notifications, that's how I got my new leaf springs.

Thanks averagejp. Ten grand is a lot of money but way cheaper than a new truck. Have considered that as an option. Hope that's not where I end up. It would not be easy to swallow.

Considering Toyota made a campaign for this issue, the won't hold the maintenance part against you. Specifically, it's not listed in the manual as something that should be done.

In all seriousness, hopefully you get what you need.

I’m amazed the dealers up north don’t have guys to just do this. You can literally have the rolling chassis out in one day. Swapping all the parts is a couple more days if parts are in stock and if every bolt doesn’t break of course. Two good mechanics could literally knock out one a week if they wanted to. Hopefully you find a dealer that wants the work and gets you taken care of.

All I can say is don't go to Graham Toyota in Mansfield Ohio they are a joke. McDaniels Toyota in Marion might have my back, I won't know until they inspect it next week. Thanks to all you guys who seem to be on my side. At 12 years old with 35,700 miles it shouldn't even be an issue. Now you know why I chose my username.

The mileage has nothing to do with op. Age does. Really the main issue is the frame was not regularly maintained for being up north( not that in the manual it’s called for) so I understand why most people wouldn’t think to do it. Once the salt and chemicals get the rust started and if it isn’t caught. Doesn’t matter if it sits in a nice garage, the rust will just do it job at eating away.

I understand that but none of my other six trucks ever had this problem. I can only assume you work for Toyota and you are trying to blame the consumer.
