Bored waiting for word that power is back on at the brewery after it went out from storms and bored enough to comb the the early days of this thread.

Good thing this guy didn't place a bet on that prophecy!

That was my take on your comment, still there is a lot of explanation about shark teeth in Kansas that is more convincing that an flood 4000 years ago.

Well everyone I have to give kudos to the OP for this thread, I find everyone's different views, opinions and beliefs fascinating. I do think the evolutionsts are no closer to accepting creation than the creationists are of accepting evolution but an excellent conversation all together.

Doesnt sound any different than today :notsure:

That is the great thing about science. We are allowed to say things like "I don't know yet".

I use to believe in creation. now i believe in evolution, it makes more sense to me. people living 900 years, all the animals of the world on one boat, a man living inside a whale, all that sounds too hard to believe.

I still believe that todays religions are about control, power, and scare tactics.

all this geology stuff needs to be moved over to KPT's earth thread. Im sure they can answer all the questions on that.

    Same here... :)
There are so many interesting posts appearing so fast it's hard to keep up with them.

This is a demonstration in real time of how each of our own chosen views is non transferrable to others. No one is actually convincing anyone else of anything. But the kicker is we ~think~ we can and so we try... and that's what makes this discussion so interesting.

Each one of us thinks they those the right view, because if we didn't we'd have chosen the other one. The only real arbiter is our lives. The consequences of our own actions which we take as the result of our chosen view are the only final judge of whether or not what we chose was right or wrong.

I think there are like 4 or 5 different conversations going on here

If one was to read the Bible and take away the message of , let's say , living life with respect for others , love and the essentials of the teachings of the man , Jesus Christ , they may find some guidance . This is true of many spiritual books .

The Bible can and obviously does offer that to many people . I think it's the leap from that to the unquestioned belief in the stories of the Bible as literal accounts of all the things I mentioned before ( 6000 year Earth , 900 year old people , Noah etc ) where it becomes unbelievable

The whole respect thing is only the second much newer book. The first book was all built around fear. Because people fear the unknown. However, fear started to lose it's touch and wasn't working as well to control the masses and line the pockets of the churches so they needed a new message and decided on love and respect. Hence the second book.

The poster simply noted the truth. God didn't take pen in hand and write the Bible, men did. He may not "understand the Bible" as you feel you do Larry, but unless you know the Bible's "..authors...its history...its context...or its content", and are willing to share these things with us, your complaint about how another views the Bible is itself without content or context. ..Just saying.

To be clear , I'm not advocating either book , I'm just saying that a person may find value in the message presented in the books , of that I have no doubt , where it all falls apart in my opinion is when the stories are taken as literal accounts of things that have no basis in human reality as we know it , such as 600-900 year old people

As I stated before , in order to believe them as fact , you need to " believe "

    again...

the bold part of this post...vvv...is what my coment was based on.
and, as far as "..authors...its history...its context...or its content"...

I suggest reading the Bible and several of the thousands of books that can assist one in understanding "..authors...its history...its context...or its content",

I've read them both a couple of times. I've also studied the history quite a bit. The overwhelming message of the Old Testament is fear and obey. The message in the New Testaments is love. As for what is unknown? Everything is unknown. We knew nothing then, we know nothing now.

I agree with that. There are a lot of things we can learn from both books but I think we have to understand that people thousands of years ago had to turn to what they wanted to get an audience or a following. IE: People feared natural disasters because they knew nothing of how or why a volcano worked, or an earthquake .. or a flood. There may be something to the message but I am amazed people, churches, still take it so literally.

My problem with this statement is that as a "believer" it is easy to tell "scientists" to "prove what you say is true." After all, science should be able to explain everything!

However, if a scientist says "prove what you say is true" to a "believer," the only response necessary is "I have faith," or "because of God."

Scientists don't claim to know everything...quite the opposite in fact. The distinction is that they look for the cause behind the effect instead of taking the face-value and blaming/giving the credit for the rest to God.

"You're a scientist so do some science stuff and figure it out," is like me saying, "You're a Christian, so say a prayer and solve world hunger."

I know this thread is just about what people believe, but I have always wondered why people wouldn't believe in God (creationism). It's all based on faith which is really hard for people to understand because they want facts. The thing that gets me is that you have absolutely nothing to lose. Believing in God as your savior determines whether you go to heaven or hell. There is not another religion that has such a significant outcome once you're dead. If you don't believe in creationism (ex. evolution) once you're dead you're just dead nothing else. I believe in God and I hate to say this but if once I was dead and found out he did not exist nothing would happen to me good or bad. So really what I'm saying is, What do you have to lose?
