Agreed, it makes me sad actually. All the mind power all over the world
huddling around memorizing books and quotes, when that energy could
be used for more discovery in space and sciences.

Another thing to consider is the urge to reproduce. The human race is
growing exponentially, regardless of the resources around it. The third
    world illustrates this.

I just watched a great documentary by David Attenborough about our
fixation on reproducing across cultures, races and religions. Food for thought. Do you really need 12 children?

It's important to have 12 children per couple because that provides more evangelists and soldiers for future battles of faith. Attrition. Also helps keep the offertory trays full. Yay tax deductions!

Thanks for the link, I'll check this out later.

That's not what that article says. He created life from existing life. The yeast already existed. Gods claim is that He created it from literally nothing by hats something that can't even be attempted because we have matter everywhere.

    Genesis
7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month—on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. 12 And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.

7:22 Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died. 23 Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; people and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.
24 The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.

8:13 By the first day of the first month of Noah’s six hundred and first year, the water had dried up from the earth. Noah then removed the covering from the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry. 14 By the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth was completely dry.

The fact that someone could be so utterly closed minded about the universe is what is REALLY terrifying.

Refresh my memory, for it has been a while since I read the bible, but as memory serves it never says God created everything from nothing. As I recall it simply says God created the heavens and the earth. It didn't say he created it from nothing. Hell, for all we know God IS the big bang!

Note that the poll itself has been closed for some time.

DOMA was just overturned, so there is still hope that humans will continue to evolve.

So wait, he was 600 years old? Is that metric years?

And every living thing wiped out. So he had all the trees and plants and lichens and germs on there too? I mean, logically, they couldn't exist today if not, correct?

God created Home Depot. Lowes, being a subsidiary of Walmart* is clearly a tool of the Devil.

I had a long post typed out adding my thoughts to the discussion, but I know no good can come of getting myself involved. With that in mind...

    * this isn't true, but I'm getting that maybe that doesn't matter so much in this thread

Wow! I just noticed this thread. How is it that something like this can be discussed here, but not politics? Anyhoo...

All I'll say is to wholeheartedly agree with Richard Dawkins:

"We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further."

I can't think of a way to put it any more plainly than that.

Yeah, I get that he lived longer than that, which it totally easy to believe. I was referring to when he started building it. God, imagine the lower back pain at 600. And no ibuprofen.

That's actually fairly likely in my mind. I think it's the cause of the bang that people are arguing now. It's easier for me to believe God did it because I've encountered God in my personal life, but could definitely understand it being hard to swallow for someone who hasn't.

On a past note, I just asked one of our pastors here about genesis 5 with the incest thing. Firstly, he said that at that point there was nothing wrong with it. There were no laws or anything like that. Not only that but you had two genetically perfect human beings, there were no defects in their genes so nothing could be passed down that was not of God. Another point is that God told them to be fruitful and multiply, so in my mind He had made a way for that to happen.

Jim also pointed out that even through evolutions scientists, everyone agrees that genetically we MUST have all come from one woman. I thought that was interesting.
