Two parts here - one comment and a question. I just got hit with a scam, but fortunately I check my bank and credit accounts religiously and hopefully caught it early enough.

I checked my accounts this evening and my checking/debit card account showed 3 transactions from Hulu. There was a $1.00 test charge, an $11.99 account charge, and a $1.00 credit (when the card was verified to have funds). I have a Netflix subscription, but they bill at a different time. At this point I knew something was up; I called my bank and concurrently had my wife call Hulu. The card has been canceled, I've moved funds to be safe, and I reached out to Hulu.

Here's the PSA: I don't know if it's a new thing, but it has apparently become common for fraudulent activity to begin with simple online service subscriptions. Hulu and Spotify seem to be the most common from what my bank and the Hulu service rep told me. While many people check their online accounts regularly they don't notice typical subscription services, especially for ones they might already have. This can lead to someone leeching your info for free entertainment, or it can lead to more large purchases.

Question: For those who have their own companies or help process credit card transactions, I'm curious - how is it possible to use a card online, without all of the correct information? Any time I've made an online purchase I've had to enter the card number, the expiration, the verification code and a billing address. I was prying and prying with the Hulu rep, who was adamant that he couldn't give out information about the account or how it was procured, only verify what I told him. After awhile (it was a long story), he gave me the details for the card that the fraudulent POS entered online. It had the wrong name and the wrong expiration date. Shouldn't that have been enough to stop the transaction?

Hulu ended up banning that card from use on their site and disabled the account associated with it. They won't offer a refund, but my bank mentioned they would process a claim and I'd have the 12 dollars back (nbd; I'm more concerned about the security). I was fortunate in that I don't commonly use my debit card for most transactions so I noticed the charge quickly.

Just thought I'd put this out there! If anything, as a reminder to check your transactions!
