Cree Fog Lights Same as Morimoto?

Just curious, has anyone bought Cree fog lights? I own the Morimoto's, but looking at the Cree lights linked here, I think they may be the manufacturer of Morimoto's lights. I know Cree does a lot of manufacturing for other major brands, so it wouldn't surprise me if this is the case.

Note that those are not Cree brand. They are 'DT Moto'. They just throw Cree in the listing to make it look more legitimate because they supposedly use Cree LEDs, but I would also consider that suspect as to whether they are authentic chips or not. I haven't used those specifically, but I did try another one that was a similar looking Morimoto knock off. It was 1/2 as bright as Morimoto. And Morimoto is on the bottom end for output in LED fogs. I didn't even feel comfortable selling them they were so bad, so I just gave them away.

 

CREE manufactures LED chips - not LED fog lights. Real CREE chips are used in many of the better LED lighting products out there. Unfortunately, many unscrupulous lighting product manufacturers claim to use CREE chips, but instead use cheap Chinese knock offs. The price is a dead give away. I'd bet good money the lights you mentioned are nothing but knock offs and thus not even worth a look.

 

I suspected they might not be legit, but I wanted to throw it out there for the masses to consider. I've seen unbranded products that were basically just as good as the branded counterpart, but these probably aren't. I've got the legit Morimoto ambers, so no worries

 

I've seen some cheap variants and the performance is pretty awful to be truthful.

 

They could also be genuine, but very cheap low-bin, CREE LEDs...

LED's get tested at the factory and then "binned" based on how bright they are. I just googled up one of CREE's own tech sheets and the lowest grade is less than half as bright as the highest grade in terms of lumens measured.

It's also possible that they raid the "reject" bin of LEDs that are not even bright enough to be ranked. You never know what these cheap sellers are actually using, which is why it's generally best to avoid them.

Just get some KC Hilites G4's and be done with it. They blow away the Morimoto's in every way.

 

and at $100 more, they should!

 

Gotta pay for quality unfortunately
