Well, if it saves you $100/month in gas like driving my corolla does for me, that's 10 months. :D Just for the car though. Not insurance, maintenance, etc. And maintenance on a $1,000 car is probably gonna be expensive! Especially if you live in a state that does safety and emissions inspections. Any car in in NY in that price range is practically falling apart.

I find it sad how, for the first time in almost a year - gas in my area is below the 4 dollar mark (3.99) and I'm jumpin' for joy.

Sad... But I'm still gettin' the V-6.

If a V6 DC gets 20 mpg and a 4 cyl AC gets 25 mpg, over 100,000 miles you will save about 1000 gal with the 4 cyl, which equals about $4000 (@$4.00/gal). So you have to consider:

    1. How much will you loose to trade in and buy a new truck.

    2. How much will gas go down (which it will go down and save you more money).

    3. And how much will a new 4 wheeler cost you now that you can fit one in the bed of your truck :D

My sister gave me a 97 Honda Del Sol 5 sp which is basically a civic. She had bought it new and was the only driver so I knew how she kept it up etc. I still had to put tires on it, brakes, & an exhaust because the one someone put on for her (chain place) was f'd up. Otherwise its a decent car, mpg is great (not as good as PT's corolla :D) but still close to 40 consistantly. As 05 said, next you gotta add yearly registration & insurance. My truck is a DC 4WD V6 auto which I knew from the get go would like the fuel so as suggested here, I watch my right foot as much as I can, don't stomp on it, but trade it? No way!

One of the guys I use to work with who owned his huge domestic truck F350 outright but had a long commute bought a new corolla for commuting. His savings outweighed the cheap payment. That I could probably see. He was loaded anyway :p

Good luck with whatever decision you make, hope you find a good car if that is the direction you go.

I only seem to hit 47mpg on my way to work.. Must be the way the hills are laid out. I drop into a valley just before the office and usually pop it in neutral for the whole hill. I moved my scangauge over to the car to watch the MPG since it hadn't been getting what I thought it should. (I later realized it was how my wife was driving. LOL) I get about 42mpg on the way back home coming up the hills and less down hill coasting. I'm also usually in a hurry to get home, change my clothes and grab a smoke and/or a beer. :D

i avg around $100 a week in gas were as a commuter car would do for around 45 -50 acutally i could go about 7work days on that, so the saving would add up fairly quick less wear and tear on my toy also, but wear and tear on a 2nd car maintenance insurance etc could add up but if i keep it long enough it would well be worth in savings i think

screw that. he lives in san diego.. that's motorcyle territory. I only drive my car about 3-5000 a year. And that's mostly cause of the kids. Moto gets 55mpg all day.

I am on my second extended/access cab. Would never dream of a double cab, even with the kids. But, If I already had one, I wouldn't be trading it in unless all of a sudden I needed a truck.

I'm surprised at how many Honda's are mentioned. Cobalts and Aveos get the same if not better mileage.
My last car was a 01 VW golf TDI, I drove the crap outta that car and got 47mpg. I drove it to Calgary the other week, Had 946km on the tank and it showed 1/4 left!
    I miss that car.

    Just read post 35, Oops!

Its pronounced herf de derf.. and if it was about that particular person, it wouldn't be archived in perpetuity. It'd be an online chat that went away when they did.

Buy a high-mpg beater for the difference you'd lose in the trade in. CRX would be good if you don't need to carry anything.
