Howdy folks, first day on this forum, but been reading posts for years.
Anyway im about to drive across the country from north Carolina to California. I've been building up my taco for the journey and wondering what basic maintenance I should do before embarking.

Kind of depends how well you keep up with typical maintenance. If you're pretty much up to date then I'd give it a good inspection crawling underneath, check CV boots, peering under the skid plates at the underside of the water pump, grease the universals, my WP had been leaking for a while and never dripped on the ground and was always hidden by the skid plate, easy to overlook. Check for weak hoses, any loose electrical terminals, the cond of the serp belt, I'd blow out the air filter element, maybe pump up the tires a little more for mileage and do an oil change prior to leaving.

    Sounds like a nice trip.

there's no difference between 1 mile and 1000. If it needs something it needs it.

I gave my truck (07 DCSB 4x4 V6 Manual) a once over, an oil change, and packed the most common hand tools, a tire plug kit, a 5gal bucket toilet (juuust in case) and an air compressor that hooks to the battery. 12,500 miles in 40 days from NY->CA and back through back roads and Route 66 and I didn't have a single hiccup. Changed my oil in a random autozone parking lot along the way. This was a fantastic trip that changed my outlook on life. Enjoy it.

My truck wasn't nearly as outfitted as yours. Me (5'9") and my wife (5'0") slept in the back of the truck (topper/shell) on a sleeping platform I built only about 25% of the time due to the 2018 forest fires out west making air quality really bad. Truck went from 130,500 miles to 143,000 miles on that trip, it's got 179,6xx on it now and I wouldn't hesitate to give it the same once-over and do it all over again.
