    You can camp out in Dog Valley, it's only a little bit outta town to the west and has unregulated camping but it is in California.

    Could also camp on Peavine right above Redrock. I used to hit those spots up a lot when I lived there. Its north on 395 past Reno, get off at redrock, under the freeway, take a right, go to the top of the hill and go left across the tracks. Follow that straight up. There is probably about a half dozen decent spots up there. All primitive, and all in NV. No more than 15 minutes from the freeway, and in the direction were headed.
