So I was doing a bearing change yesterday and while trying to get the axle free a I dinged the first thread just a bit. Like a dummy I tried to thread the nut back slowly and I thought it was ok will it was not and its F'd. It's only the first 5 or 6 threads so my question is do I need to get a whole axle or is it possible to get a new nut and get a re-thread tool and attempt to rethread the axel? Truck only has 80k on a '09 so its not time for a new axle. I pulled the axle anyways thinking I may need a new one and going to run up to ECGS Monday and grab a clamshell while its out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If the thread is past the cotter pin you'll need to replace either the complete axle or if you have a spare you can pull the boot and just replace the end. If it hasn't damaged past the cotter pin you can use a spindle rethread kit. Make sure to replace the nut if you're going to try rethreading.

That's repairable and safe to do. It has not gone past the cotter pin which means that when you get the new bolt in all the thread will catch which is what you want.

Should I just get a standard spindle thread kit? Does anyone know the specs so I can get the correct one?

Is the bolt and threads a M28x 1.5?

You need to find out the size and thread pitch of the axle then you should be able to get it. An easier way would be a thread file set it should come with a set of thread pitch guages and then several files to fix the threads those don't look too bad. Third and final option make your own rethread tool out of a nut. If you have a triangle file you can make the rethread tool it doesn't always work but you essentially turn a nut into a die by cutting angled vertical grooves in the threads

Not to sure what the thread size is, but the nut is 35mm.

Eeesh...I had the same issue when I did my wheel bearings. I used the axle nut to hit the end of the axle with a sledge to pop it loose...and I didn't notice until I went to put the nut back on that the NUT was bent...The axle threads were fine. I'm glad I didn't force the nut back on...a trip to the dealer for 2 nuts (still had to do the other side but never needed it)

Does anyone know if I’m correct with saying the threads are M28x1.5? I measured the shaft and it’s 28mm I believe so pretty sure the M28 is correct. I’m gonna try a triangle file and thread file first I went ahead and ordered a M28x1.5 die but really want to make sure lol

99.99% sure that's what I recall...I was going to buy this one when my dealer said they had none in stock...and then a grease monkey popped in and laughed at the parts guy and said something like "We have a bucket of those in the bay, how many do you need" they didn't bother with inventory for the "bucket o' nuts"

I have a small triangle file, you mean just run it around the shaft and try to re cut by hand? Just file and turn file and turn so on?

No triangle file to cut grooves in an axle nut to create a die to fix your axle. Thread files to file the threads and fix the threads 2 different processes. I should of put them in list form to be more clear.

Yes...that's what it is on my '07. Had a similar issue a couple months ago when I replaced both front wheel bearings.

What did you do? Seems as though these die things are hard to come by or you have to wait forever? I might just swing it by a machine shop or find a junk yard one

I was able to very slowly and carefully use the still good, old axle nut from the other side as a die. The threads weren't too badly screwed up, so I was able to thread it on a little, back it off, clean the threads with a file, and keep going until it finally went on without binding. Took about 30 minutes. I was lucky.

I have since ordered and received an M28 x 1.5 tap, die, and a set of thread files to have on hand in case it ever happens again. It's too bad you aren't local, or I'd let you borrow what you needed.
