We drove to the desert today to drop off my nephew. There was a 60mph tail wind coming through the pass on the way out there and then we turned and it became a tail / cross wind.

When coming home, driving into the mostly cross wind, I heard a tapping sound. It stopped after we turned and pointed into the wind. I assumed something in the bed was flapping like a strap or some plastic. After we get home, 90 miles later, I believe this was the tapping sound. This has never been out before. There is glue on the back which has peeled up and a clip in the front. It snapped back into place but Idk now

Has anyone else had this occur? I can only imagine that it was sticking straight up into the wind on our way home

Interesting... Is there a failed clip that would typically be holding it there or is it just compression?

Looks more to me like the heat made the adhesive fail on the double sided tape that holds that trim down then the wind got under it. Take it to the dealer it's covered under your 3/36.

    Shit...
I knew I was forgetting something when I had the TSB done yesterday.
Mine has pulled up a couple times(1/2" or so), but not as bad as yours.

Its taped in the rear where it wraps around the cap. It's got a compression clip up front which looks like it failed. Maybe I can bend the clip if it happens again after I get it fixed by Toyota

The clips are in stock at most dealers, I see a lot of Rav4's that have that after car washes.

Man, I had this happen the day I picked my new truck up from the dealer. Cross wind, heard a click then a clunk.. When I got home I found the trim piece in the bed ( lucky!). Clip wasn't broken, so I added some silicone and she hasn't budged since.

Just traded a 2012 Tacoma in on a 2016 TRD Off Road. The 2012 had the roof molding come loose 3 times over the years. The dealer always replaced it, even the last time with > 50k miles on the truck and no extended warranty. Seems this is a long time issue with Tacomas, however my son has a 2008 Tacoma with 80k miles and his has never come off. Auto car wash blowers are one culprit.

Looks like a good reason to replace it with a rack.

However, they are very useful to others. Picking up one of our kayaks.

Wouldn't it be better in the bed?

Sure, if there is nothing else there. Lots of times if we are going to a camping location we have mountain bikes or dirt bikes and other gear there.

As opposed to a failed trim piece that flops around and may fail again?

Regardless of how useless you think they are to you, its helps to have an additional anchor point to tie to over the cab or find yourself having to haul an oversized ladder / kayak / canoe / SUP when the bed is full of other gear. You may not use it all the time but when you need one, it's nice to have in a pinch.

It would permanently fix your floppy trim problem though.

I had mine pop up when I was going 75 on the interstate. I noticed it when I stopped for gas and popped it back in and haven't had a problem since, however I also haven't been on the interstate since it happened either.

Carry over problem from Gen2. I had one come lose on my 2009 and it put small dents in the roof. Dealer fixed rubber strip and dents under warranty.

I honestly didn't think anything of it when it happened, I still don't. If if happens again I'll talk to the dealer about it and if they want to charge to fix it I'll just glue it or something, no big deal.
