Anyone have a hard time inspecting their Tacoma, after putting a lift in with a drop differential bracket with aftermarket crossmember!?

I think it varies, headlight height is a big problem, and proper fender flares/mud flaps.

We can't pass drop brackets here, not because of the frame cut, but because of the drop bracket itself and headlight height. Things need to be OEM.

Telling me it’s totaled and I have to get something from Toyota in writing saying they except and agree with the lift manufacturer about how the install of the kit

Wow that’s a no go. What state ? I’m pretty sure you’re not the only one .how were they able to pass. Wonder if the inspector only had a bad day. Maybe ask for a referee to sort things out.

I can’t get it to pass. because I cut that crossmember to drop the differential and put the aftermarket crossmember in they’re telling me I messed with the integrity of the crossmember, but the aftermarket crossmember replaces the crossmember that I cut

Sounds like a PA thing? Back in the day, my folks had to take a car off the road because of rust on the rear frame section. It would have cost more to fix than the car was worth.

In the early 80s, they also had a cat delete done by a good ol' guy at an inspection station to be able to run leaded fuel. Of course, they were tied to him for annuals from then on. They chatted about all that stuff upfront and knew what they were getting into. You might wanna do some off book searching to see who might be in your area, unless you got put in a database for the fix.

I hate to say it, but Toyota won't sign off on that. In their eyes you ruined the frame, which is sort of true, from a structural integrity point of view.

Sucks, but it makes complete sense. How many of the cheap drop bracket makers have supplied converted trucks to the NHTSA for crash testing to ensure that the safety is not diminished?

I’m going to bet you $100 right now the answer is zero.

So, take it to the car wash and start filling out the form on Carvana and Craigslist out of state to sell it.

Plenty of these type of things on the road. Not saying I agree with it, and not saying its as strong as factory. But someone somewhere is passing them

You didn't say what state or where you're trying to get it inspected. Id think the dealership would be the hardest

My buddy works in service for a local Toyota dealer near me. He said whenever they have someone want to trade in a lifted Toyota, the first thing they do is put it on the lift to see what is up with the lift. If anything has been cut, they won't take it on trade. Not worth the liability.

    Oh look, another mod....
....this is yet another reason why I refuse to lift my truck. I may not pass a state inspection because I have degraded the integrity of the frame. Thus, making is less safe and WORTH less.

I hope all you "Look at my cool-ass-lift" boys are paying attention.

Plenty of nice lift kits that don't require any cutting of any sort.

Go to a different inspection shop. Maybe find one affiliated with an off-road shop.

In my city, before covid, Toyota dealers did drop bracket lifts on new trucks and sold it with $10k+ markup. Climbed into a Tundra in the showroom with 8" lift and it was just silly towering over everything.

Back in PA in the 1980's l had a Baja Bug that was hard to get through, went to one of 'those types` of inspection garages. The guy charged 50 bucks on top of the regular inspection cost for hard to pass vehicles.
