It’s not that my state won’t pass because of cutting it, it’s not knowing if it’s up to oem specifications of the stock cross member they don’t feel safe passing it because they don’t know if it’s the same integrity as the stock one

So it’s your state not allowing the truck to pass inspection because of the frame alteration. That’s understandable…….it’s BS but understandable reading the inspection criteria

Pretty much, the RC post someone shared here (maybe you, I forget) said that you buy it and use it at your own risk if conflicting with local/state laws re inspections etc.

My state is very strict, one reason I won't do a headlight retrofit (yes, the right way before anyone asks).

Technically by the letter of the law you can't add lighting or modify existing lighting.

Long ago my friend's older brother added the CHMSL (third brake light) to his 1983 Olds Delta 88. It was one that was a full light, not shaded or had a cutout etc. He failed inspection for it in 1986 citing that rule.

In other words, he failed for adding a light to his car that was working as it was supposed to; specifically, a light the federal government felt was a wise enough idea to mandate for all vehicles to be made with starting in 1985 or 1986.

    Yup.

That said it might be a referee decision. My truck failed for no middle belt and the title on my truck says only 2 occupants, I argued it with the referee in that manner and won.

The irony is the Toyota OEM crossmember is flimsy. It's easy to rip the front diff mount from the crossmember once you put on >35" tires, front locker, crawlbox, etc. Again, keep looking for an offroad-friendly shop. Any reasonable person can see the gauge thickness of the drop bracket crossmember and conclude it's stronger than OEM.

I know the stock crossmembers are designed for puny 31" stock size tires. Start playing the rocks and shit like this happens: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/broken-front-diff-mount.572444/

Also the stock LCA mounts on the crossmembers are tinfoil, hence the existence of gusset kits like this: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/marlin-crawlers-upcoming-hd-lca-frame-brace-kit.610921/

The parts included with drop bracket lifts actually address many pre-existing weaknesses in the stock Tacoma (another one being the bend-prone spindles). It's just too bad the high lift amount makes the truck tippy.
