What is this white crud on my rims. Car soap don't take it off used Dawn and a scrubby. Saw something about the acid in car washes wheel cleaner but I've only taken this truck through a car wash once. It's on all four rims.

Are they new tires? If so, probably the lube the shop uses to get the tire on

Almost looks like a clear coat coming off, or the anodizing is oxidizing. Is it positive, meaning it’s something on top of the surface vs something eroding away? I’m guessing so by your description.

They've been stained from some type of chemical, likely a high PH cleaner. If you didn't rinse the Dawn off completely and it dried on the surface, it could do that. Matt finishes like that are more porous so they're more susceptible to staining. If you use wheel cleaners they have to be scrubbed and rinsed thoroughly immediately.

I keep Dawn in my detailing arsenal….

For when I want to strip the wax from my paint and start over with new protection.

    Finish is failed.

No magic in a bottle will fix that.

It could be an allergic response to Firestone rubber. :D (I jest, I jest)

Yeah that was an easy way to strip old carnauba, I used it many times back in the day. Dawn is not so effective for today's ceramics, even the spray SIO2 are quite chemical resistant.

I ceramic coat all wheels now, it would likely have prevented this, or at least minimized the damage.

I agree on the clear coat failure. Can you peal it off at the edges?

I had something similar on my car paint years ago. It was road chemicals that washed off a bridge from above. Only thing that would take it off as a last resort was rustoleum rust remover.

Perhaps an internet trip to chemical guys and see if they have something to help out. Or Griots. Heck, maybe send each a few pictures, close up’s too, and see what they recommend.
