My Taco has cruise control, and it has the little indicator on the instrument cluster that shows when it's on. What it doesn't have is a little indicator on the instrument cluster that shows when it's engaged. I think every other vehicle I've ever driven that had a cruse control had that. It comes in handy in certain situations.

I'm not above kluging a little light indicator somewhere on the dash for that function. So far tho, I've had no luck locating a point in the dash wiring that could indicate when the cruise is engaged.

    Anybody else ever tried this?

Nope, but I've had the same thought as you. My Subarus got it right... "cruise" indicator when it's enabled, and a separate "set"

My 1st gen had the same 'problem' only indicating that cruise is enabled. With a '03 or earlier you might have had a realistic shot, they had a cruise control actuator that pulled a separate throttle cable. I think you're pretty boned after that, an electronic throttle body means "cruise control" isn't much more than your ECU looking at the VSS & then telling the throttle & transmission to try to hold a speed. There's no reason for there to be a steady 12V signal for you to use to trigger a light.

You could maybe try to go nuts with a latching relay triggered when you tap to set, but then you'd have to figure out how to unlatch it on all the different things (brake, clutch, cancel tap, enable button, and I assume moving the shifter on autos) that'll disengage cruise.

That's what I've been suspecting. Any wiring conductor that would indicate this status is probably sealed up inside the ECU.

That is pretty much how it works.
The whole system works of resistance signal to the ECU as far as Set/Active goes.
