There was a nice DIY thread I used to install cruise on my 09' Taco. Is there such a thread for the 3rd gen?

It's the same exact thing. You simply remove the airbag and plug in the switch and mount. Then reinstall the airbag. But yes there is a thread somewhere I believe

I saw a video on the Rostra website and that what they did. What concerns me is with the 2nd Gens some were wired into the steering column and some had to be wired all the way to the ECU.

Yea, some of the base models needed to be wired in. Some of the clutch switches I think needed to be installed for the manuals as well. I believe the 3rd gen are all prewired though. I installed one on a customers base SR with utility package and it was prewired and I used a rostra kit. I don't even think the new kits come with wiring. Can't fully remember though, it's been a while now

It looks even easier than doing it on the 2nd Gens and cheaper.

One thing that the Rostra video reccomended which I didn't see posted in the install thread was disconnecting the negative battery cable as the first step.

That's just for safety. Some people get really scared around airbags. Also if you were to disconnect the airbag and turn the ignition on your going to through a airbag light. Most scanners can't clear then so it would be a trip to the dealer for a reset, and a good chance they will charge you a half hour to do so

I think most of us are scared around airbags. So, is it preferable to remove the neg battery cable? Better safe than sorry I would think.

Also the Rostra video said that the torx screws that hold the airbag on have retainers to keep them from falling off. Is that correct?

When I did mine you don't have to unplug it, rear a towl on top of the horn top under the steering wheel and the air bag will fold right up and test there perfectly while you put the switch in!

I was referring to retainers on the side screws holding the airbag down, not the retaining clips on the airbag connections.

Yea, there is a plastic housing around the screws to prevent the screws from backing out and falling. And yes if your nervous around the airbag, simply pull the pull the battery. I would pull the positive cable, before I pulled the negative. Just my own preference
