The gear it's in shouldn't have any affect on functionality of the CC.

Make sure the clutch pedal is completely up in 5th.
Try pulling it back with your foot. If the switch back there is barely disengaged CC won't work.

So you think the clutch is not fully engaging in 5th gear?

Clutch pedal. Not the clutch disk.
If you look up in there at the mounting point, you'll see where the switch is that needs to be fully pressed for the cruise to work properly.

Well whats different about 5th gear then? He said it works fine in 3rd and 4th just not 5th. What would be different about 5th to make it not fully retract and activate the switch? and how would he go about testing this?

Some people rest their feet differently at cruising speeds compared to surface street speeds, etc.
My thought is he may be resting his foot on the pedal when in 5th on the highway.
These are just suggestions on how to go about troubleshooting this.

    Read the following:

It's a 95 Tacoma with a speedo cable (vs. the newer style electronic VSS) and a 5 speed trans.
I don't see why any other electronics would stop anything from letting it actuate in 5th.

    Glad I could help!
You can unplug that little switch back there and then loosen the nuts that hold the switch to the bracket. Twist the switch to "adjust" it closer to the pedal.
    Done.

You can adjust the switch as listed above if it just needs a fraction to work, but don't adjust too much or you could effect your pedal height adjustment.

    Few things I'd check:

Work the switch (one closest to you up under the dash) plunger with your fingers to ensure it is not sticking or gunked up with dirt and fuzz.

Also, are you or did you used to get pedal noise every time you pressed the clutch pedal? Pretty common. You may have worn or missing pedal bushings. They are just plastic. That and the spring may have worn into the pedal arm and is causing your pedal not to return all the way like it should.

Some have modded the pedal to use an external spring to return the pedal and have had good luck.

I have a 1995 also and I did the bush replacment (not back with plastic) instead and it makes a world of difference.

Here is a bit of info on it with part numbers if you have the same issue and decide you want to repair that way.
