Greetings, I have a 2008 Tacoma 4.0 and I was wondering if anybody knew what was wrong with my cruise control. Recently my cruise control would work sometimes but then not at other times, which would make me assume the clock spring is bad. The only confusion is that my volume, mode, and skip controls still always work. I assume those are also hooked into the clock spring. Anybody have any ideas?

    4 run, 2 don't
Only commenting because I believe the A750F is used in the 2nd Gen Tacoma; I've got a GX470 with an A750F.

My shifter has this locating pin/dowel that I guess broke, allowing the shift knob to just barely sit in the '4' position if I wasn't paying attention.

Not sure if it was the being in 4 part, or the bad pot holes causing my shifter to go from 4 to D and back again, but once I realized it and moved the shifter to D, cruise control worked like normal.

Checking for play in your shifter should take 5 seconds.

Something is making it trip off. It could be anything that the cruise system monitors, it could be getting bad data from an on and off shorted wire somewhere, or out of range data. It could be possible that the ribbon is frayed. But you'd have to check it out first.

Does it go off while going in a straight line?

Try turning on cruise control ad different positions while turning the steering wheel.
It kind of a “test” to see if it is the clock spring.

Other than that, you’d need to do real tests.

Does the horn work all the time? Or does the horn not work when the cruise fails?

The horn always works, I’ll look later but I’m assuming that turns make it work then not work.

If that’s the case, it’s a classic example of a bad clock spring.

Yeah probably, I’ll try out what you said before later. I’ll try different positions and see what works

I have a 2008 and my Cruise Control doesn’t work either. I look forward to figuring out what parts are exactly failing and replacing them.

I tried to turn the wheel and turn on cruise control and it seemed to work in most angles besides a few. A few angles the cruise light did not turn on. Im assuming that means the clock spring is bad. BUT, all of the other controls on the wheel worked when the cruise light wasn’t turning on which confuses me.

You could fire the parts cannon at it, clock springs are known to go bad, the ribbon cable can fray. Car Wizard did a video on a Tacoma clock spring where he disassembles & inspects it. Link to video

    Good luck :D

By following the video you can at least inspect the wiring going to the CC stalk.

I have the exact same problem in my 08. I also have the added bonus of the + Vol control not always working. I’m going to replace the clock spring and see if that is the solution, its been bugging me like crazy losing cruise control.

The ribbon cable in the clock spring has multiple wire traces for multiple functions. On yours it seems only the circuit for the cruise is effected so far.

Okay, that actually makes sense. Once I take apart the clock spring and inspect it I’ll take some pictures of what might be damaged.

You will probably see something like this effecting one trace or more. Note this is not a Tacoma clock spring cable. The Tacoma will be similar and with stereo controls and cruise probably has more traces.

Little update since it's been a while. My cruise control works on and off depending on the day really. Sometimes it'll work for the entire time I'm on the road, and other times it'll refuse to pop up on the dash. At this point I will assume its the switch, since all other steering wheel controls work when the cruise control is not. I'm assuming it's just worn out?
