On a 250 mile roundtrip camping trip the cruise control failed to work near the end of the trip.
After setting overnight at home it starting working again. What might have caused the stop working and then start again. Thanks for info. fs. 2004 tacoma 6cyl 5 speed.

Check the tail lights. Sticky switch on the brake pedal or the clutch?

A bad clockspring will cause this sometimes. I believe Toyota calls it a “spiral cable”.
When it goes bad, it losses connection when the steering wheel is turned.
And can “reconnect” at other times when the wheel is turned.

Try turning the steering wheel back and forth while turning on/off the cruise control.

Might be your clockspring but if it was your clock spring then the airbag light would be on aswell. Id check the clutch pedal and make sure its at the top point everytime you try to engage the cruise control (pull the clutch up with your foot)

Mostly stock - but I do have a suction cup phone holder - its pretty sweet
I have this issue on my manual 1st gen Tacoma and I agree this is likely the spring. Try putting your foot behind the clutch and pulling it up by lifting your toes. The pedal may only move and inch, but that is what is needed for the sensor to be happy and turn on cruise.

Just sharing my experience, sometimes i would inadvertently lightly touch the clutch pedal while in cruise and that would be enough to turn off the cruise. I thought something was off for a couple weeks until i realized the pedal was that sensitive. So just watch your foot if you haven't.
