My cruise control turned off on its own today while I was out on the road, and at the same time, the check engine light came on. The check engine is still on, and the cruise still won't engage. I thought it might be my radar sensor for the adaptive cruise control acting up, but the light to clean the sensor came on and went off later in the day (not uncommon in winter); so, it's apparently unrelated. Now I am thinking fuse, and, of course, I am thinking of taking it into the dealership.

Anyone have something like this happen to them?

Do yourself a favor and pick up an OBD2 reader from Amazon

Best 60 bucks you can spend to save yourself time, effort, and trips to your dealer for something as trivial as a loose gas cap.

That being said something is going on use that factory warranty. While you're in the lobby OBD2 reader.

How about that? I checked the gas cap, 4x4Runner, and it was secure, and taking it off and putting it on did not solve the engine light. But it did go off after I fueled up later that day. I suspect you were on to something with the gas cap. Must be a sensor in that system that was goofy. I ordered an OBD2 reader, so if it happens again.... Thanks for the responses, posters.

this is fairly common in the rust belt.. the filler necks will start to corrode around the gas cap sealing area, and have pits that the rubber gasket cant's seal (or the seal gets old, and shrinks/stiffens up, simpler/cheaper to replace the gas cap) this causes faults in the evap system. however i think he was saying to get an OBDII code reader and keep it in your truck so if you have a CEL you can read the code determine its not one that will damage the vehicle, and continue until a proper diagnosis can be made and a repair done. typically if its an emissions CEL you can continue, however some emissions failures can cause damage to catalytic converters, O2sensors, and so on... so be careful what you do.. if the CEL starts to flash.. pull over and shut engine off..

Especially when it's cold. Also note that cruise would need certain feedback from ECU and sensors, so if there's a code it'll shut cruise off to keep the driver "safe" or damage to engine.

Correcting a loose cap won't make the light go off immediately. Only after so many keystarts will it clear. Or you can clear it with a good scanner or battery disconnect.

Consider a ScanGauge II instead of a simple reader. Can give you lots of real time info right from your ECU
