I have a different take on it. I like the tech, but I use it exactly like I would the old non-adaptive: only on lonely stretches of highway where there is little to no traffic. If traffic is heavy enough for it to be constantly adjusting, then I shouldn't be using cruise, smart or no.

Funny story, I rented a shitbox Accord for a recent trip, I thought I would take the opportunity to see if honda's adaptive cruise was any better than the tacoma. I ran it for 30 miles in rural tennessee, and while doing so I found myself trapped in a cluster of 6 other cars. ALL of them were running adaptive cruise. It was easy enough to figure out when all seven vehicles were constantly auto-adjusting to the car immediately preceding... so that my vehicle near the rear felt like I was riding the tail end of a damn slinky. It was amusing for a few miles, I admit.

It is not desensitized, it is amount following distance.

Yeah I found it to be pretty hit or miss. I think it would be more helpful to have like a cruise mode that would keep you around the same RPMs or shift patterns rather than speed alone. I've been on stretches of empty highway when you hit a steep up or down grade and the car starts shifting like a mofo to maintain a speed.

My sensor gets fuddled quite frequently now from my CBI bumper with the short hoop so I stopped using it but only recently found out I can still use old fashion cruise control without any issues. Needless to say I was pretty happy/excited. I'm all for new features but not for 100% replacing perfectly good working stuff

For those that hate it… why not turn the system off and use traditional cruse control. You guys do know you have that option right?

I'm not really getting all the hate for the auto-braking. I absolutely love it. And it absolutely saved my ass one night.
Dark (night) country two-lane road. It saw the deer off to the side, way before I saw it. So that worked out well..
I will say on the other hand, it could be 'fine tuned' a bit better. I've had the braking happen when someone isn't fully in the left turn lane, or the bicyclist on the right who doesn't fully move over past the white line .... But hey.... It saved me from smacking a deer at 40mph, so I'll live with the little defects

My TSS has been amazing. Not sure why folks are having issues.

My 17 doesnt have it, but the wife's 4R does.
Sometimes it brakes so hard its like an over-reaction from a poor driver.

Not sure, but I think the OP and others were lamenting about the adaptive cruise control behavior, not the Auto braking function per se. They are similar yet different.

I've lived in the snow my whole life and can't imagine a situation where I would want cruise control while I'm driving on snow/ice/slush...

    Let's hope not...

This morning my wife and I were on I-95 doing around 65 in the right hand lane, cruise control on. Up ahead a large truck had pulled off the road and whatever the driver was doing resulted in a large plastic bag blowing around in my lane next to his truck. It looked like one of those bags that would fit inside a 55 gallon garbage can, but instead of it being black or white it was somewhat clear. It was dead in front of my vehicle, almost level with the grill, and just as we were about to hit it the wind pushed it downward and I heard it hit under the vehicle and come out the back. The cruise control and anti-collision did nothing. We were in our Toyota Highlander.

OK...and? Are you saying because it didn't happen that 1 time or 100 other times that it's an acceptable risk factor? Or are you trying to say that because it didn't happen to you that one time that it never happens?

    Seriously, what's your point?

Yes it is normal, because of the dang cruise control, but the way around it is to use the classic cruise control, which is activated by holding in the cruise control button for a few seconds until the different icon comes onscreen. That is how one activates classic cruise control. It is WAY better that the stupid default cruise control. When I first drove my truck home, the dang thing would "slam" on brakes a block ahead of me if it saw a car stopped at a stop sign. I was about to take the dang truck back, as that was completely unacceptable. Then I learned about the classic cruise and all is good now. I only wish I could change the default to classic cruise and not the newfangled cruise.

I have yet to experience anything like that on my tacoma. Works the same as my gen1 tundra's cruise control did. Imo, this doesn't sound normal at all unless for some reason it become's disengaged? Idk, but that sounds weird.

My point was to provide the facts of what happen to my wife and I under a situation amazingly similar to a prior statement on this thread. Now if the bag was perhaps black or white or some other color than clear perhaps the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) would have responded differently...I don't know. Do I feel that the TSS is a risk to my safety...no I don't. Was I on-guard for possible vehicle braking because of the plastic bag, ready to either click cruise control off or hit the gas...yes...especially since I could not do a quick lane change due to adjacent traffic. Do I think this is information that others might find either helpful or interesting...yes. And lastly, I'm glad that you mentioned the possibility that the adaptive cruise control could respond to such an object otherwise I might not have been on-guard concerning possible braking but rather just been concerned with running over a large plastic bag.
