I've had my '02 Tacoma manual for a bit now and drive long distance pretty regularly. Used cruise control on a long trip so I know it worked fine (had just purchased it about a month before). Was using cruise control on a hill and threw it in neutral to coast. Totally zoned out and hit the gas which spun the rpms up until I caught myself. Ever since the cruise control hasn't worked. I've checked the fuse and it's fine, but other than that based upon the circumstance, what could my next step be in diagnosing the problem? Thanks for any help!

Unplug your battery and reset the computer? That's kinda a weird one. I'd also double check the fuse. Also, why do you put it in neutral to coast down hills? I'm manual and Haven't had any issues with my CC. I also just leave it in gear, even going down a hill CC will make sure you stay the right speed.

    Welcome to the Forum!!

Might just be bad timing a switch failed just when you took it out of gear

I really hope you have the EWD** for your Truck I would not even attempt troubling shooting with out one.

Depending if you have the 3.4 or 2.7 both cruise control circuits are different and you can have 3 or 4 fuses to check

My Cruise control quit it was removed the next day.

Best of Luck** EWD / Toyota Electrical Wiring Diagrams

Is it just not setting, or is the cruise system not coming on at all. In other words, does the cruise light on the dash come on.

take a look at the cruise control cable and see if it is on the bellcrank on the throttle body.

Not sure if OP is still around, but if the light is on, first thing to check is the clutch switch.

Does the light on the dash come on? Automatic or manual transmission?

There’s a couple sensors on transmission that could be bad

Yep the cruise light comes on... but cruise wont engage when I hit the button. I did find the fuse locations and they are all fine. I'm thinking maybe one of the brake switches...but those seem to being working fine as well. Automatic trans.

I guess the speed sensor could be bad...but my speedo works fine. Wouldn't a bad speed sensor affect the speedo??? Its an automatic trans.

Not helpful to the OP, but sometimes I'm so glad that the only option the original owner of my 2012 checked was 4WD.

No power anything, cruise, automatic transmission..... Something to be said for simplicity.

if U have A N Y codes the cruise usually wont work

    as mentioned by others

disconnect the batt for a while............might get rid of a code or to

    & give U a lucky reset

My first thought was either the brake or clutch switches. Since it's an automatic I can guarantee it's not the clutch switch. :)

check to see if you have a trailer harness also… these things seems to plague Tacomas.

I do have a trailer harness...but everything seems fine with the harness. When I plug my trailer lights into the harness everything works like its suppose to. Could my speed sensor be bad and the speedo still work fine???
