My experience ....... as you approach an incline put your foot on the gas pedal and go just above the set speed. It won't drop a gear and rev the rpms.

After all ... it is cruise control .... it is inanimate object ... it can not detect these inclines ...... going to get hell for this but use common sense ... at the end of the day, it is not an automatic pilot.

Maybe it's a new thing. I have 2011 4x4 Access Cab Manual and it chirps. I love the cruise control.
None of you say what year you have but you are in the 2nd gen section.

I expected the RPM rev but not near redline. Tach jumped from 2K to over 5K. I can understand 3 to 3.5K. 5K was scary. I have used cruise control in every vehicle I've owned and never seen a jump in RPM like that.

You're missing the fact that most of us are complaining that the CC in our Tacomas performs significantly worse than other vehicles we've owned. Common sense says that if Ford's CC can handle hills without scaring the bejesus out of the vehicle's occupants, Toyota should be able to do the same. Even my old '93 Chevy pickup had far better CC than my '06 Tacoma. This isn't state of the art technology we're asking for.

Gee ... I didn't mean to get your rpms spinning ..... but you are missing the fact that it is a cruise control ... plain and simple.

As others have stated .... mine ('06 and '10), as well as their's, performs withour a flaw .... perhaps those that don't need to bring it in to the dealer and have it checked out.

    Next topic ........

Tacoma cruise control is for flat roads only or so it seems. Cruise controls are "supposed" to save fuel but I can't see how this one could with its constant up and downshifting.

It sucks so hard, I find it hard to breathe.

CC works perfectly....for manual transmission. I can see where people would be complaining about how acts with automatic. On hills or just bumping it up a few mph on flat shit will cause it to go downshifting and such. Nature of automatic. My car does this shit to if I leave it in auto mode. Thank goodness I have sportronic so when using CC in it I just make sure to use manual mode, that way it cannot do the annoying shit.

Just crossed 70K on my 2007 Tacoma 4cyl Access Cab.

I live in Kansas City, so hills are rare. Traveling in Oklahoma and Colorado though, the cruse doesn't get used. On steep rolling hills it behaves just as others have described. Lots of over revving and accelerating way past the set speed. I just don't think the power to weight ratio is appropriate for cruise use in that environment. A big V8 would probably do fine.

When people are complaining about a problem with their truck, and you chime in that the cause of the problem is a lack of common sense (aka stupidity), it typically won't go over well.

Again, based on your logic, the CC on all cars should behave like the faulty Tacomas. Every other vehicle I've owned does not.

Check. Was told that it's "normal," as was at least one other person in this thread. After putting it on the back burner for a while, I recently searched google to see if anyone else has had the same problem and found this thread.

Doesn't it though? When you're so accustomed to how every other CC unit operates, this one comes out of left field.

I'm still having the same issues, it's just not as reliable or well-programmed as other CC units, and while I still love my Tacoma, I don't buy everyone that tries to dismiss this as a knock on the Taco - it's a fault and it's no more complicated than that. If you live on flat land, you don't deal with this. If you don't, it doesn't mean you can't use cruise control (this is the first vehicle I've had that I had to help with the cruise control!), you just have to treat it differently.
