Hello! I just got a new Tacoma and it’s a big jump Technology wise compared to my other vehicles from the 90’s. So I don’t know if I’m using the cruise control wrong or what. I press and hold the button but now green light comes on. Any tips?

FYI, if you press and hold, it disables radar cruise (becomes regular cruise that doesn't adjust for the car ahead of you).

So for some reason when I press and hold it I see no light coming on saying it’s on

Press once, don’t hold. In the middle of the gauge display, it should tell you it is ready.

Works pretty much like an old school CC with the added adaptiveness.
    • Push the button at the end of the CC stalk to turn it on in normal adaptive CC. The green icon in the top upper left of your multi-purpose display in the center of your gauge cluster will turn on with the little car next to it. In this mode it will slow down to match the speed of the car in front of you if it is going slower than what you set your CC speed to be.
    • In adaptive CC you can adjust how close you will follow behind the car in front of you by pushing the button on the right of the steering wheel, second from the bottom. The button looks like the front of a car with lines/waves coming out from it. There are three distances you can set using that button, but by default it is set to the farthest. When you press it you'll see a full screen page in the display briefly show you what you are setting it to.
    • Push and hold the button at the end of the CC stalk until the green icon comes on and then you are in non-adaptive CC. The icon will appear in the same place as before but this time with no car next to it. This is like old, normal CC where it is just set to a certain speed and will maintain that no matter what is in front of you. I assume the PCS would still attempt to prevent you from crashing though.
    • Once you have the type of CC selected (adaptive or not) and on, it is pretty normal. Push down on the stalk to Set speed. When you have a speed set the MPH you have set will appear in the upper right of the display, so you always know what it is set to. Then you can push up or down on the stalk to increase/decrease that speed by 1 MPH increments. Pull the stalk towards you to Cancel, or tap your brakes of course, to disengage CC. Then if you want to start the CC up again at the same speed as before, push up on the stalk to Resume.
    • Unfortunately, when you turn the truck off, it doesn't remember your previous settings. So even if you had the CC on before, you'll have to turn it back on each time. Also the following distance always resets to the farthest away setting.
    • One other thing that probably won't apply to you, but if you have the 6MT you can shift gears without disengaging CC. I was surprised by that because in previous MT cars with CC, the CC would always disengage as soon as you push the clutch pedal in, same as the brake pedal. Makes it super slick with the adaptive CC if cars are slowing down some but not completely and you need to bring it down a gear or two for a little while, then shift back up when things pick up again.

Well I read the manual and tried the things said on here and still didn’t work. I’m thinking it’s having some issues.

I too was presently surprised by the ability to downshift the MT without disengaging the CC. It is nice when one feels the radar cruise lightly applying brakes and knowing that manually applying brakes turns off cc, but instead you can then aid slowing down by down shifting.

So does the AT also allow manual down shifting while maintaining CC?

What speed are you testing. If I recall it won’t turn on below 25 or something.

And you sir are exactly that.

If you can’t read basic information on how to set up your vehicle, well you deserve to be owned by everyone who wants and will exploit you.

This comment was right on, but I have a slight disagreement with the use of the word "normal" as describing the adaptive cruise control in the first section. OK, it is the default but as someone who HATES the adaptive cruise control, I just disagree with the word normal, as to me, it is anything BUT normal! I always now use the regular standard cruise control that has worked for vehicles for decades. I do get annoyed though, because the default is adaptive cruise control, which only requires one doing a quick split second touch of the button on the cruise control stalk, whereas, if one wants to go into what I will call "classic" cruise control, then one has to press and HOLD the button for several seconds, until the cruise control light comes on. I know, several seconds doesn't sound like much, but in actual practice, it is annoying because I have to take my eyes off of the road and look at the screen in the middle of my dash, until I see that the classic cruise control light is on, and ready for use, whereas before, in classic cruise control, I only had to quickly hit the cruise control button and I was good to go. It is just annoying...

I think the adaptive cruise control is one of the best things about my truck. I love it.

Most people like the adaptive radar cc. What is it about the system that you hate?

It is annoying because when using the "captive" [as I refer to it as!] radar cruise control, the dang thing hits the brakes when it is not even CLOSE to anything! Example; I am driving around town, and a block ahead, there is a car sitting briefly at a stop sign in front of me a block ahead. The dang captive cruise control system hits my brakes, even though I am a full block behind! And don't even mention that it is adjustable, because I have it set to only activate at the closest mode, and it STILL will hit the brakes when it doesn't need to! Example 2; I am driving down the street in town, with captive cruise control on, and there is a curve in the road, with cars parked on either side of the road. BRAKES! The dang captive cruise control will hit the brakes as I approach the curve, because it "sees" cars parked on the side of the road, but because they are parked on the side of the road in the curve ahead, it thinks they are "in the road" ahead of me, and it hits the brakes! Example3; the dang captive cruise control hits the breaks when I approach an intersection with the words "STOP" in big letters painted on the street! There are more examples, but I think you get the picture! At this rate, if I continued to use captive cruise control, I would need to replace the brakes in no time at all due to over use! I have already inquired as to whether or not there is a way to reverse the "default" cruise control to the classic cruise control instead of captive cruise control, but there is currently no way to switch the default. It is just annoying as hell...

Push button on end of stalk, then push stalk down. Cruise is set. Deusxanime already said this plus all the other details, but here it is again...

Heh, maybe I'm misunderstanding your driving situation, but this sounds like a driving condition I wouldn't use cruise control of any kind in. To me it's for the highway and select roads.
