So I looked up my spec sheet online & it doesn’t show factory installed cruise control. I appreciate y’all’s help & just need to contemplate what to do next. I don’t know what was left installed of the aftermarket or what was removed.

Yeah, that was a port installed cruise. Rostra may still sell a kit for it. Those kits were ok, not as good as factory but it got the job done. The majority of the system was encompassed in the module under the hood. All you had to do was run the harness into the cab, install the switch to the column cover, and connect the power, ground, brake interrupt and clutch switch (if it was a manual transmission). Connect the cable to the throttle shaft and it was ready to go. It sounds like a lot but it is pretty straightforward.

Another question would be can I install factory cruise, since it looks like I have the factory plug, & use the aftermarket switch? Sorry for all the questions. I couldn’t find an answer for this one.

You can install the factory cruise but the switch won’t work, you will have to get the factory switch. You can probably just get it from the same donor truck the other parts are coming from.

Thanks. I read the write up you suggested and might go that route. A decision I’ll have to make. I need to dig around in my truck to see if anything is left from the aftermarket one & see if PO butchered any wires. He had a habit of just removing things that gave him problems.

Normally the only thing that failed on those port installed units was the module under the hood. The only other thing I saw was those units would be mounted to the inner fender and, over time, it would start to crack the sheet metal of the inner fender at the mounting holes.

I see a lot of these with connector just laying on the fender....but they never had a factory cruise...
    but.but...the connector is still there......
......so maybe the other connectors are on the harness too...

you know its like the BMW's .....they all come with heated seats....
.....but they only turn them on if you pay extra....
    .....but they're there.....

Toyota makes a shit load of vehicle's world wide....they cannot afford 1000 different cables every year world wide
    that would be crazy......

Only thing I'd be worried about ...is that cruise computer...
I'vee been all over my truck....and have never eyed that....

From what I saw in another post is the factory module goes inside the passenger door kickplate, if I’m not mistaken.

Dont want to muddy the water here but I have done a factory cruise control install on my 99 prerunner single cab, keep in mind this may not apply to your 2001, from my experience you need to stay in your year group when it comes to parts swaps and mods (95.5-97) (98-2000) (2001-2004). I bought the cables, servo and module from a wrecked 98, note here you need the cable from pedal to servo unit from a vehicle thar had cruise its 3 inches longer than the non cruise cable. My truck was prewired so it was plug and play, the hard part...you need the rear plastic steering wheel escutcheon with stalk, got that from a wrecked 99 with cruise the stalks wiring plugs right in to the slip ring, even got lucky with the color, the stalk is actually mounted to the rear cover (escutcheon) is why you need it. Yes green light comes on and cruise works good, truck is also prewired for 4x4 even has a fuse in the slot for it....thats another mod for another day

Wish you had a pic of that escutcheon and how it plugs into the slip ring....

I'm familiar with all that because I recently swapped a 4 runner delay wiper out in that same collar with my Tacoma's oem....

and that was plug and play....

I'd like to know someone's who's layed hands on the cruise control module....
    the diagrams are ambiguous.....

Is there a chance that's just built into the servo unit....

2 systems give me a headache trying to figure out on these trucks...

this cruise loop using the brake system.....
any shorts or mishaps in numerous places and it wont work...
even something as stupid as a burn out tail light....

The other is the start ground circuit....which allows maf and fuel relay to be engerized....and not burn everything up.....

Like i mentioned earlier things change between year groups in these first gens, but yes there is a cruise control module, its about the size of a pack of cigarettes (Luckys no filter) it mounts behind passenger footwell kick panel. Remove passenger door threshold scuffplate (4 screws) then panel should slide out and its right there one small connector, literally plug and play.

Does this brake switch look like the one for the Rostra cruise?

As I recall, the factory switch was used on the brake. The Rostra system just t-tapped on the “cold” side of the switch.

Yea, not sure what the purpose of that is. I was just hoping getting the module & cable would get it functioning. Trial & error I guess.

I suspect the rubber plug that snaps into the metal housing is missing. You can actually still buy them from the dealer.

Good Evening, I have taken my cruise control out of my truck and have the Toyota parts still. Let me know what you might be needing. Currently I know I have that cable that goes from the module to the throttle, the actual module from hood. I recently took out a silver cruise module that is under the passenger kick panel. I have the factory steering wheel with the cruise control stick as well.

I’ll keep that in mind. I’m currently looking into what is left of the Rostra unit on the truck. Thanks.
