Can you only short on the futures market?
There's no way to do it on exchanges like gdax is there?

 

Honestly I am not sure on whether it is possible on the exchanges because I don’t have the cojones to try it even if it was possible. Something about having unlimited loss potential just doesn’t appeal to me haha.

 

Y'all, words for someone who had made mistakes and been in this game for awhile. You NEED to know what you are investing in. If not then you are day trading. And that's a whole different bag (and a full time job). Things like Tron (trx), yes big gains, and big loses. But you have to ask Your self, what does it do? What is the market cap? And then factor in hype. If the answer is you don't know then it's even more of a gamble. Lots of new money coming in and lots of opportunities for easy gains, which is awesome. But remeber who you are working with, profession whales who make their $ of uniformed investors.

Wouldn't unlimited loss potential = unlimited profit on shorts potential?

 

I meant unlimited loss potential on a short position meaning the price of an asset can theoretically rise to an unlimited value. I.e. a giant loss on a short. At least with a long (buy) position the lowest it can go is to zero so you know exactly how much you can lose.

You are right though the lower the price of an asset goes when you short it, the more profit you make when you buy to cover.

 

I see. Yep, that is a scary proposition. I guess you'd have like a limit buy order to cover your short and limit your losses?

Yep. Shorting without a stop loss order in place is straight kamikaze

 

When you “short” an asset that means selling shares of it that you don’t currently have in the hopes that the price goes down and you can buy back the shares later to cover the ones you sold. If the price goes up instead you’d have to buy the shares at a higher price and lose money. If the price goes up too high you’re obviously fucked. Because of this “shorts” aren’t allowed at a lot of places cause there are too many people who would lose their asses.
