I am about to do the cs144 gm alternator swap and ive already upgraded the wiring to 4 gauge. my question is do i need to replace the stock 80 amp fuse that is between the alternator and the battery? i know the alternator will be putting out roughly 140 amps and i dont want to blow the fuse and run off battery power until my truck dies in the middle of no where. also do i need to replace the engine to chassis ground with 4 gauge as well? im going to be pulling 33 amps for the electric fan im swapping in, bout 15 amps for HID's, etc. with system, 5000 watt monoblock amp. thanks ahead of time for the help.

    He man.

I just did this and have done tons of research.

There are several people out there that have done this that actually have sucessfully run the CS144 off the stock wiring...very sketchy though if you ask me.

I would up grade yes. Im using an actualy breaker. You can get them at most auto stores. Its rated at 150amps and if it does pop..no need to carry extras. Worth it to me.

I also had to get a much larger belt then all the posts i read. Most guys that have done this you will find have the SC. So thier belt works great. Others found that if you just got a Power steering belt for the alternator it would work. Well..didn't for me. I had to get still a larger belt.

I have the part number and length. Just haven't uploaded the picture but i will for you tomorrow.

i have many many threads with info book markted. Also i am going to put together a write up as i wired mine for use with the CS144 but you can switch back to the stock on the trail if your CS144 blows out on an expedition or whatever. Also my build will have it all in there.

Any other questions im more then happy to anwser.

oh and forgot about the grounds..

Yes, very good idea to run a 4ga wire to the body and the frame to help with current flow. Its all part of the Big Three upgrade and does help especially if your going to be running lots of stuff....which i am..a LOT. So i am doing this as well.

what about the routing of the wire? the stock wiring goes from the alternator to fuse block, then fuse block to battery. do i jus need to run a wire from alternator to battery then battery to fuse block and ground the fuse block to the battery?

I am just use the stock wire that goes to the battery from the fuse box to send it power. There is no ground on the fuse box. All the grounds are else where in the the truck.

However if you do that like i am. You have to disconnect the old stock wire that came from the alternator. Very easy to do its just in the fuse box.
