It'll be plug in play for the engine itself, just connect battery and fuel lines and the engine will run. Getting it to work with everything else in the truck will still be up to the installer to figure out.

Doesn't matter for a 3rd gen. It's only smog compliant for 1997(if I remember correctly) and older vehicles.

While this is true, I don't expect the 2TR-FE will be right for me in 10+ years. I wouldn't know how to calculate the increase of towing capacity this would bring to the table, but it would likely keep me from having to upgrade to a Tundra by then.

We can speculate here all day, but the answer will only come when the swap and years of ownership are behind us.

More goes into the tow capacity of a vehicle than just the engine. Just cause you can pull more doesn't mean you can stop and control it safely still.

Actually, the basic architecture is the same as the 4.0L

Right, but I would assume it would at least get me from 3500 to 6400.

GCWR is 11360 regardless of trim.

With a good tune intake exhaust some added fuel the baby Cummins could probably be 350-375 pretty simple match that with a 6 speed manual trans and it would be a real towing gas saving machine in a light truck!! Plus the ability to run many more miles!!

Just notice you have the 2.7L, in that case then yes the cummins should technically bring you up to around the 6400 rating of the 3.5L

Not practical at all but a cool idea!

I'm all for stuff like this. That's why dirt everyday is so fun to watch.

That's going to be difficult, esp. in states with emissions testing.

How much are the GM LS3 E-rod kits going for? :D

A bit of a rhetorical question, but does this kit also come with a lawyer?

MPG would be important to me, but not from cost or enviro standpoint. Miles per tank would be a key factor for me! Having to carry less fuel, and have less fuel-range anxiety would be awesome. However, as only one other person has realized / commented; EMISSIONS REGULATIONS. Have fun with that one. It'll rob your wallet and your MPG.

That's only 2 lb ft of torque than the 3.5 and 1 more than the 4.0

Not worth the swap in my IMO.

I'm all for diesels but it'd be hard to justify in a new truck. If you had a high mile 1st or 2nd gen (or maybe 3rd if you put 50k+ a year or something crazy) in good shape, it could be a neat and viable option. But to buy a truck and rip it up, I'm not so sure.

Was thinking this also. One that the frame has been replaced or just rust free. Occasionally see one for sale with a bad engine- that would be worth it IMO.
    Interesting thread @Chief Taco

I'm genuinly surprised there isn't at least a hybrid Tacoma, given hybrids are kind of Toyota's thing.
