wow... and you're good at math... At Berkeley Engineering they never taught us that $10k = $50k. I guess its because I prefer to buy american built.

You could always buy a JDM diesel front clip and install it if you live in a state without inspections. I've thought about picking up one and swapping it into a 4Runner to make a diesel Surf.

ETA- obviously that's not a new crate engine but you can get low mileage units with all of the wiring and engine goodies.

Here in Nevada it cannot be installed at all unless the truck is a 1967 or older, only the original motor options from the factory are allowed in anything newer than 1967.

I believe the feds are limiting the conversion to 1999 and older. I would think that you would only have to pass the requirements for your year rather than being a factory installed equal. I've installed a bunch of non-factory engines into cars and had them smogged no problem.

    This.

This is why this idea is doomed from the beginning. There are far better options for more power at a much cheaper pricepoint. Since OP does not (admittedly) have the knowledge to do the fabrication, wiring, install, etc himself we're looking at north of $12k for an install like this...Not to mention likely changes to trans and other components. If the motor health is of concern, replace it with a lower mileage one and boost it or replace it with an LS motor or Toyota V8. At 190k you also have to look at the health of other drivetrain components. Are you willing to foot the $12k bill atop the ensuing maintenance items that will need to be addressed further along the suspension/drivetrain? If you plan to keep the thing literally forever and have a diesel boner, by all means party on. I admittedly want a diesel really bad myself, but I can assure you that I am not going to do the R&D to drop one making less power than my current setup into my 12 year old Tacoma.

P.S. Picking fights with the community will not help you long term in regard to your standing on this forum nor will it encourage others to help in your goal. Respect others input, and if you have a troll... don't feed it.

The reality is that Cummins has succeeded with this program. This is all anyone has talked about for almost 2 years and I doubt that it will really go all that far.

I can't see this swap costing less than 15K. Now,if a fella' was able to do it himself he could knock a chunk off that amount. I still don't get the diesel thing. Would like to see Toyota offer the small V-8 in the Tacoma. Edit: Holy shit I just looked at what the engine cost. 9 fuckin grand!? Is there an adaptor plate to use stock trans/transfer case? Motor mounts have to be fabricated, wiring, etc. Do you need a stand alone engine management system to operate?

Installing it ones self is the idea. Cummins has made it the easiest possible so fat by including almost all of the wiring, harnesses and etc. But yes this would still leave you with having to put in your mounts and probably an adapter plat for the transmission.

I'll go back and rephrase that: I completely understand the difference between the mechanics in gas combustion versus diesel. I'm just exaggerating because the only ones I've driven were company trucks, so I never did any of the maintenance on them myself.

I get that but I don't think you realize the the advantages vs disadvantages. If you did, you would realize that a diesel in this truck is a bad idea that gives very little advantage besides "look I can roll coal"

I definitely understand the advantages and disadvantages of diesel; its not difficult to research or grasp. There are many people out there that have done diesel in Tacomas and are very happy with the result. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and am looking for some input to help map this project out. Most people just pay someone to install theirs, which is just too rich for my blood.

for me it would be gain in mpg. meaning my 34gal tank would take me much farther between fill ups when out in BFE. the tq down low is also nice if you need to tow anything. a mid size diesel is awesome. the downside is the stupid price of midsize diesel trucks. this engine coming in at 9k, figure another grand for a adapter and another grand for misc its not that bad of a price. i wouldnt go swapping out a good motor, but a blown engine sure why not. brand new 4.0 is around 5k already.

If it's so easy and you think it's worth it, stop telling the internet and just go do it. Take the 2jz guy for example. I have to admit, the crate engine package they put together is pretty nice. I just don't think a 2nd gen Tacoma is a good platform for the swap.

I don't think anyone ever said its so easy or even easy. But other than its a lot of work, why would the gen2 be a bad platform? especially in context to other diesel swaps? I'm guessing you have references or experiences that has let to your thought.

Not that I'd ever drop one in my 28k Tacoma, but I would be all over swapping one into an older Jeep. Rolling TJ's with blown engines are fairly easy to come across.

What I haven't been able to find, is what transmissions will bolt up. Or bellhousings.
