The 3rd gen windows have 3 panels, and the pass through is limited because of that. If there were a 4 panel back window that slid an equal distance but to both sides, the pass through could be several inches wider - specifically, wide enough for my rear end to crawl through.

Can I have a 4 panel back window fabricated? Does anyone know a custom auto glass place that will do that? Or does this exist and where could I buy it? Can an earlier gen window be modified to fit?

My local auto glass guys can only order a replacement 3rd gen, three panel window.

Yes I know about the Breezer removeable windows but the surround on them is so large that the pass-through is too narrow top to bottom.

I’d guess this would be a custom project with great expense, most likely enough to make you want to just get out of the bed and walk around to a human sized door.

Usually I do, but it's not always that easy. Like everything is cool when I go to sleep, but I wake up and someone had followed me and is creeping outside, which has happened. Women do get attacked sometimes and its something we have to think about that I think a lot of men don't.

    A pistol will be cheaper.

In short, no one makes a 4-piece rear window.

Definitely wise to stay safe, but I still don’t see this happening. Since boondocking sounds common, you need to find other measures, as @Bertw192 mentioned.

I have a revolver and a Reuger pistol, but walking around to the cab like a rootin-tootin cowboy is just not as sensible to this 60 year old grandma as slithering into the cab and avoiding the situation altogether.

Bummer that the window solution doesnt seem as straightforward as I'd hoped.

Is the rear window structural? Does the cab lose integrity if I just remove it and install an accordion boot to the shell?

eta: Of course I will go around, it's not like its going to prevent me from doing what I want to do. It just would be nice for that occasional creepy situation. Plus my dog could go back there if she gets bored on longer trips.

That would be great, and I read a rumor that someone figured out how to install one.in a Tacoma? But I never found more details.

Thank you! I'll do that. This is the kind of lead I was hoping for. In the realm of mods, I'm willing to pay what people pay for any other crazy thing they want to put on their truck.

For the right amount of money, you can do anything you want. But buyer beware, I've been on TW for a brief moment (+5 years) and I haven't seen it done.

I hope you're the first, because I'd sell body parts for a Tundra/4Runner style rear window.

Honeslty, it would probably be cheaper to have elective surgery to make yourself fit through the factory window, than make the window fit you...

    Good luck!!!

Do you have a shell (topper)? If so, maybe remove the window and install a boot?

I do, and maybe that's the answer. I wish I could see one that's been done. And is the rear window important to structural integrity of the cab?

    Oh look, another mod....
Why stop at changing out the back window? If you have a shell topper on, just have the rear panel removed entirely and then fuse the bed/topper to the cab of the truck! Then remove the back seat from the truck and you can have a Tacoma-Van!

    Yes
No, the window it not structural. You do have to remove all of the rear interior trim to access the hardware to remove the window but it is all very straight forward and simple. Once the window is removed you can reinstall all of the interior panels and once the boot is installed it will look nice. Typically the front window of a camper shell is not the same shape as the rear window of the cab because of the generic windows they use in the shells so you will want to trim the shell window hole to closely match the cab window opening. This is also really easy to do the only trick to cutting fiberglass is to use the correct blades, you could use a carbide jig saw blade. Sounds like a boot would be your best option and is also very cost effective. The " accordion boot " is only around $8 per foot.

This really might be a good way to go. I intend to keep the shell on long term - I pull a trailer when I need to haul stuff around so the bed can stay in camper mode. Removing the window doesnt scare me because it can be put back, but cutting that brand new shell does clutch me up a bit.

Have you ever seen this done in a pickup? Is it noisy or terribly janky looking?

Toyota needs to give us a full window like the Tundra and 4Runner. I would absolutely pay extra for that!

    Yes
It is a very common thing, heck back in the past shells never had front windows and you always used a compression or accordion boot. Cutting it is no big deal at all.
