Yeahhhh, didn't quite make it. Got two different job interviews(and both offered) this week ... screwed me all up. I'm close though!

Just a few engravings on top and they're done.

Ugh, it is really not fun. Legit prospects though, have to see it through or it would eat at me.

Kinda funny, found out my Dad worked at the one place in 2002 (5yr before he passed away). Looked at his file and everything, was pretty trippy.

It occurred to me after I left, but I got him a job where I was working at the time. He only lasted a few weeks, and I remember him telling me about a particular lathe at his next place (similar machine that I was running at the time). It's still there pumping out parts.

The owner there knew so many people that I worked with over the years, it was wild.

My current job has me in golden handcuffs, nearly impossible to leave but my commute really sucks. Only reason I still have feelers out.

    I'm 40 now, so ... guess I'm also on the back 9.

Big time. Machinists left the industry in massive quantities back in 2001.

Apprenticeships went away, community college programs went away, and younger people get their first exposure to machining via programming CNC in school. They all want to be top paid programmers, but don't realize that most of the skill that shop owners want is adaptability and intellectual curiosity(somebody who doesn't want to be chained to a desk). They also want people who can teach, but even many seasoned veterans tend to hoard their knowledge to protect their position.

Programming is easy, IMO. Being a machinist who knows how to plan and react to anything is very difficult to find these days. Apprenticeships really laid a good foundation on this front, and they really need to come back for the sake of the industry.
