Custom Double Cardan Driveshaft Installed

    I emailed the shop owner to see if he can dig up or would be willing to provide part numbers for my build, which was a clone fo another forum member's build on here. I didn't get an itemized invoice, it just contained the information about a custom two piece driveshaft with balancing. The shop does do good work and is one of the few who can properly balance a fully custom two-piece driveshaft in this region.

    Very interested in the leaf springs you're using, do you have a link? I'm looking for maybe 2" of lift and something better than ox-cart ride. Reduction in axle wrap would be the TITS.

    Running the EL095R dakar packs. Seem to be pretty good, still have some vibes but they are much more bearable and without the traction bar things are just much more simple.

    I'm definitely interested in seeing the parts list that you have for this shaft as I need to get one made up for my Tacoma. But will need a 1410 slip to mate to my sterling rear axle drive flange.

    So far the guy has not responded to my request for part numbers. I know he said all of the flanges were made in the USA, but poking around, it's hard to see any part numbers on the assembled driveshaft.

    A quick update since I'm home sick with a nasty cold. I went back to the stock driveshaft a week or two ago. I installed a set of 3rd Gen TRD Off Road stock springs, which gave me a similar amount of lift compared to the stock pack with a 3-AAL without the overload. As a result, I decided to put the stock shaft back in to see if it would just work with the 3rd Gen pack. The answer was no, it would not without shudder.

    FML is what I was thinking, but hey, it was worth a try. I did some measurements of angles and decided to drop the pinion using some 1 degree shims I had on the shelf. Upon doing this and slightly spacing the CB down, it's 97% free of shudder. Even stock there was a little bit of shudder depending how much throttle was applied off the line, so I find this perfectly livable.

    For anyone in the NorCal area, I will be selling the custom driveshaft I had made for my 2015 DCSB 4x4 automatic. It won't be cheap, but I will cut some $$$ off what I paid. I've put less than 2k miles on the driveshaft since installation, since the Tacoma is a 3rd vehicle for me. PM me if you're interested, otherwise I'll post it up in the classifieds when I get some time.

    I think what made it such a bitch for me was my stock pack and the lack of the overload. The axle would wrap quite a bit, so trying to set it ideally for low speed shudder, would result in vibrations elsewhere. The new pack has 8mm stick leaf springs, instead of 7mm on the 2nd Gen pack. Combined with the overload, the wrap appears to be less than my modified pack.

    So why are you getting rid of the upgraded shaft that would help with vibrations if your pinion angle isn't matching your carrier bearing angle? Just because you want to go back to a simple set up?

    I had bought the new take-off 2017 TRD Off Road springs about 10 months ago and had them sitting in the garage, along with a 1" block if I needed it. I decided to install them without the block to see what the stance of the truck would be. After doing that, it was fairly level, so I decided to see if I could go back to the stock driveshaft. I've been under the truck so many times, that swapping parts and making these adjustments takes little time. I swapped the leaf packs in under two hours. The driveshaft swap takes me a little over 30 minutes. Shimming the diff takes me about 30 minutes. What got me working on this again was that I was really close to trading the truck in on a 2019 PRO, so any part I could remove to recoup some money made sense. However, I'm happy to report that with a different leaf pack and some adjustments, I've got the stock driveshaft working just fine now.

    1. Stock 2017 TRD Off Road 4x4 Leaf Springs (no factory shim).
    2. Installed a 1 degree shim to angle the pinion downwards. This matched the factory shim position on the 2015 leaf pack.
    3. Installed the OME carrier bearing drop spacer kit that I had sitting around.

    End result, it's smooth and good to go. I tried the same things with the stock leaf pack (every direction, all different types of shim thicknesses/angles) without any luck. The only way I was able to get rid of the vibrations was with the new driveshaft using the stock modified pack.
